Cannot boot after upgrading to latest nvidia driver

I run the latest kernel 68 6.8.0-1 on my laptop with two drivers, one integrated driver and another 3070 Ti. I updated the system today and here are the packages installed:

Packages (13) discord-0.0.50-1 firefox-125.0.1-1 inxi-3.3.34.1-1 lib32-nvidia-utils-550.67-1 libxnvctrl-550.67-1
              linux68-6.8.5-1 linux68-nvidia-550.67-7 mhwd-nvidia-550.67-1 nvidia-settings-550.67-1
              nvidia-utils-550.67-1 opencl-nvidia-550.67-1 xorg-server-21.1.12-0 xorg-server-common-21.1.12-0

The output looks normal:

The data mounting thing seems a benign error but I am not sure what might cause the ACPI BIOS Error but I suspect that this is due to the nvidia update.

This is my output for inxi, obtained by running manjaro-chroot -a on live ISO.

Edited: I realized that I should not run the command on live ISO, e.g. the linux kernel version printed will be of the live ISO rather than the actual system I have before the update failed. I use timeshift to revert back to the system before update failed and rerun the below commands.

Please let me know if there are more info needed. Thanks!

You must have a time machine.

Have you tried reverting to kernel 6.6.x instead of 6.8.x to see if there is any change? You might also double-check ACPI related settings in in case there has been a BIOS reset. Also, check the manufacturer site for any late-breaking firmware updates.

Gen 12 mainboards are still fairly new; it’s also possible (likely) that it’s not (yet) fully supported; in which case, patience is probably the only remaining virtue.

Is also an unfriendly thing, if not the source of problems.

If you have trouble gaining access then maybe here is a place to start:

(you did give some outputs so maybe you dont need it, but other visitors may)

Also denotes a woefully out of date system.

Current Stable branch kernel 6.1 is at 6.1.85-1.

https://packages.manjaro.org/?query=linux61

Or even more troubling, given your statement about upgrading certain packages, a partial upgrade state.

Please make sure you are fully synced and up to date.

sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syu

lol sorry it should be 6.8.0-1. But I do have time machine aka timeshift to revert my system back to that before update failed.

I just did a test run and it still throws me to the black screen unfortunately.

There is one! But the same black screen even after I updated the latest firmware on windows. Just for curiosity, for my dual-boot laptop, I switched to windows, updated firmware from the manufacturer, and that will work for linux? I am just not sure if firmware installed on windows will affect linux system.

I guess I will have to wait a little before updating. Thanks for your help!

Thank you for your reply and also the link to resolve unbootable system! I ended up using timeshift to revert back to the system before update.

I realized that I should not run the commands on the live ISO as it reflects the system of the live ISO, even after I do manjaro-chroot -a. So I rerun all commands and edited the post. I am using linux 6.8.0-1 instead of 6.1. Sorry for the confusion.

I tried pacmna-mirrors but it gives me the same 13 packages to update, which gives me the same black screen. I also tried updating the manufacturer’s firmware on windows as well, but unfortunately that does not help…

I suppose I should have been more specific. When I mentioned firmware, I meant the BIOS itself. The manufacturer website will presumedly offer access to BIOS updates to address incompatibilites with your particular hardware combination. Being such a recent machine, that might be a good place to start; however, avoid any beta BIOS releases. Cheers.

oh i see. Yeah, in this case, I have already updated the BIOS from the manufacturer’s website. There is no noticeable issue, but it just does not solve the update issue. So I guess the issue lies in elsewhere. Thanks for the explanation tho!

I saw many people run into issues because of the hybrid driver, as a workaround i can recommend to disable your iGPU in Bios and just install the normal nvidia proprietary driver.

Since your Laptop using in idle more power, its maybe a downgrade for some people…
I’m just point at the last option… when nothing else helps.
