Can I reset the desktop and boot configuration?

I have an upgraded Manjaro installed on a Raspberry Pi 4B (SD card). Some time ago I was experimenting with the (new) kms kernel options in /boot/config.txt and that broke the desktop.

The system is configured to boot to the CLI (which is good), but if I log in and type “startx” then I see many errors. Is there a way to reset these configurations to defaults?

Looks like your config.txt/cmdline.txt is back to original. I have no idea what DE you were using but evidently you disabled it’s Greeter since you boot to CLI. If you enable back the Greeter it will probably will work and guessing you do not have startx tied to your DE.

KMS can be some what flaky but most of the time it can made to work.

The desktop I had (and that I’ve reinstalled) is Xfce. I flipped the vc4 overlay from

#enable vc4
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d

to

#enable vc4
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d

No problems noticed with desktop browsing and web apps. I’m still waiting for an idle moment to test with RetroArch which was what I was looking to try out the first time round.

You might want to comment out in config.txt:

#gpu_mem=64

And also add some more CMA gpu memory to the dtoverlay=vc4 lines depending on which you settle on for the pi4:

dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d,cma-512
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d,cma-512

I know nothing about RetroArch but if is terminal based you might also want to see how disabling dtoverlay=vc4-? lines in config.txt and uninstalling xf86-video-fbturbo (This is now obsolete in the testing branch) and install xf86-video-fbdev. It might have an advantage with terminal based apps but I have no clue.
