Bugged windows (The GUI of apps, not the OS) after update

Hello, and sorry for such strange title but I don’t really know how to name this issue.

Just after the update I rebooted as always and I saw that the GRUB was in some “low resolution mode” (similar to when you play really old games that don’t even allow 1080p but will occupy the whole screen anyway), something I found strange since it hand’t happened before.

After that, when I log in (X11), I had the issue I am showing in the next image.

Summary

In the image you can see 3 “windows”, first one belonging to Brave Browser, second is Plasma Engine and third is the Plasma Menu (the one that appears when you click on the plasma icon on bottom left corner).

The image seems ok since there is no graphical issue at all. The problem are the next points:

  • Windows always appear on top, just where Brave Browser appears, and it happens with all the applicantions, though width is application dependant.
  • I can’t move the windows below the point where you see the Plasma engine window.
    • I can change their width and height beyond that point though.
  • The plasma menu appears where you see it and sometimes with some visual bug (the shutdown, hibernate, … buttons appear dupped and laggy)

What I have tried:

  • Rebooting but the problem persist.

What I hadn’t tried:

  • Changing to wayland.
  • Changing the plasma engine options (The warning says you should change it if you know, and I don’t)

About logs, I don’t know what should I send, and sending everything would be a mess since I have some UFW Block every 5 seconds, so the logs are full and hard to read without proper filtering.

Also I have this icon that didn’t appear before. It is about the Plasma Engine.

Summary

Error_2

The second, right next to packages manager icon.

This could very well be configuration files with invalid data. This may happen when widgets gets out sync with plasma releases.

Not all widgets are fully maintained or updated in timely manner to match plasma releases.

Plasma engine - although I have used plasma for several years I have never seen a configuration item for it. Yes there is a binary plasmaengineexplorer but I have no idea what can be done - but since you have a warning - I believe something trigger the warning.

I suggest you create a new user - then test if the issue persist - if it fixes the issue - use the plasma reset script

I suspect it’s a translation error.

I created the user but the problem persist there.

According to deepl it is “plasma display engine”, I thought that with the image I could skip the word “display”.

Sorry if it was confusing.

I am still at loss what you mean

There is a section Display & Monitor in System Settings but there is also a Window Management section.

What grub does at boot regarding font size and display - simply ignore - it has no meaning to when Plasma takes over.

Many people think that images is better than words but that is not true - you know what the image means - those seeing the image have no clue - which is why it is so important to take the time to describe the issue properly.

It still is. :man_shrugging:

In Plasma, there is the window manager, which is kwin, and there is the display server, which is either Wayland or X11.

Some strange logs I have found:

unit: kwin_X11
kwin_core: XCB error: 152 (BadDamage), sequence: 37587, resource id: 20983901, major code: 142 (DAMAGE), minor code: 3 (Subtract)

No, the notification icon (the second image I sent) isn’t about these options.

I have check such “app” on the internet and I don’t find it. Either in spanish or english. I will try to find it and tell you which one is it in english. Now it makes sense it is confusing sorry for that.

Let me describe it with other words.

When I open any app, the window of such app always appears at the top of the screen.

If I try to move the window to the center of the screen, it gets blocked at around 1/5 of the screen (from top). The start menu also appears there, when it should be at the bottom left corner, just like the first image.

Another thing that happens is this message when I open “spectacle”, the KDE screen capture app.

An error occurred while taking the screenshot.
The KWin screenshot request has failed:
Invalid screen requested
Potentially relevant information:
- Method: CaptureScreen
- Method specific arguments: “HDMI-0”

HDMI-0 is a secondary screen, which has been plugged all the time, but should be disabled. I tried disconnecting it, but the error message remains.

This is simply all I know.

The grub issue solved itself, it no longer happens.

I repeat, I will try to find that “plasma display engine” since I don’t find it anywhere, not even the package manager.

Ok I found it. It is “plasma renderer” in english.

I have searched my system - and I cannot find anything in System Settings that looks like the one you are referring to.

I understand from your reply that your screen gets clipped at an arbitrary vertical position - is that correct?

We need you to supply the textual content of

inxi -Fzay

But I think it has something to do with a multi display arrangement.

The location of windows is written to their rc files and thus the may be all over - everywhere.

I suggest you reset your plasma to the default Breeze or Breath theme - then use the reset script to clear your configurations - for best result - log off - switch to a TTY and run the script.

Look at these files/folders - they are save to remove

  • ~/.local/share/kscreen
  • ~/.config/kwinrc
  • ~/.conf/kwinoutputconfig.json

Correct

It is not in system settings, I only find it through search in the start menu.

I found this link with an image where it should be (need to scroll one or two times to see it), it is the first image, and that is what I am referring to.

https://phabricator.kde.org/D7934?id=19778

The post is really old, so KDE must have moved it somewhere else.

Ok, but what script? The one you mentioned before?

I found one - Plasma Renderer - on english language systems, which resembles what you showed.

It should be set to Automatic for both dropdowns and Force unchecked.

I am going offline for today

I run the script and deleted the files you mentioned but the problem persist.

The first option of plasma renderer switched itself to Software again.

This is presumably only happening when you use X11 - right?

If you use Wayland the issue is not present - or ?

Hello again.

I think the problem was related to the second monitor. I turned it on and saw that it was stuck in the manjaro loading screen, right after login.

I don’t know why this happened, or what cause the issue. But I solved it by rebooting without my second monitor (HDMI) plugged in.

The steps taken to solve the issue:
  1. Did the reset (idk if it was necessary):
  1. Reinstalled kwin (everything was black on my main monitor after this).
  2. Reboot without my second monitor plugged in.
  3. Now everything works fine. Both X11 and Wayland.
  4. I reboot with second monitor plugged in and the main monitor set as primary (it resetted after the first step).
  5. The issue happens again.

Since I have to configure everything again I will stay in wayland now, so I can configure HDR.

I won’t mark this as solved yet since I want to see if a more expert opinion knows something about this.

Some notes

I had similar issues when installing manjaro. When I booted to the usb, it seem bugged without the bar that is at the bottom. But I discovered that it was because HDMI has priority over DP and it was using the second as primary.

If I installed manjaro with the second monitor plugged in, I had some issues with the monitors (sorry cant remember what exactly), so I solved it by unplugging the second monitor, intalling manjaro, and then configure the monitors on the installation, setting the DP one as primary.

This issue reminded me of this previous one.

Everything is working fine now, I will tell if on the next boot with the second monitor plugged, the issue persist.

Yes, it still happens. I need to boot without my second monitor plugged.

Well, I don’t think this is exactly a solution but, I simply reinstalled manjaro and configured everything back again. I have no issues now.

Extra details

Just to add more “information” to this topic. With one screen only, I could move the windows to the right side of the screen and when they reached the limit, they appeared on the left side of the screen. As if it were some cyclic screen, but only in that direction. Though the mouse wasn’t cyclic.

In other words, I could move windows from left to right infinitely without losing the window cause it appeared on the left side.

I couldn’t do it the other way around, and the right side is where the second monitor is configured.
