Brother MFC-J1260W Printer

I have no idea how to get this thing running on Manjaro. The drivers are provided in .rpm or .deb, the formatting is completely different from the tutorial I found about converting drivers, there’s no AUR packages for it… I tried extracting the cups and pdd file, putting the former in /usr/lib/cups/filter, and using GUI to grab the latter (which is located in home) and now the printer is RECOGNIZED, but any attempt to print with it fails. It says something about “Filter failure.” I also can’t remove anything from the printing queue.

For record, I am using it wired. It runs perfectly on windows 10, so I know it’s not the printer’s fault.

It’s hard to tell what exactly you did. I would recommend to undo all changes you did and instead first try a generic Brother printer package brother-brgenml1 which is in the AUR. If you are on Plasma you can select the driver (after installation) from “System Settings → Printers”.

I have a MFC-1910W (black and white, with scanner)

You select Linux and deb package.

Then choose “Driver install tool”, it’s a bash script you’ll have to launch in a console to install printer and scanner drivers for your printer model.

You’ll need to install the DPKG package from the Manjaro repository before running the script.

Unpack and launch the script, write the printer model and it will do all by itself.

For the Scanner, i could not made it recognized as the printer (automatically with lpd), when the script ask for the scanner, i put the ip address of the printer to have the scanner working (not a big deal).

I wonder a bit since it’s a deb package at the core how it resolves dependencies - because regardless of how you install the driver the brother drivers will depend on lib32-glibc.

So, I went to follow clarkb’s instructions and found that despite the website saying it’d be a .deb, what I actually ended up with was a shell script… Attempting to “Run In Console” threw an error about needing to be run in root.

It’s an interesting approach, but nothing that would have come to my mind. Because the more obvious approaches are 1) use a generic driver provided via the AUR 2) if this doesn’t work download (not running them) the brother-mfc-j1205w build files and modify them to download and install the drivers for the MFC-J1260W instead. Now since the latter could turn out to be more complicated than it sounds going for 1) first makes a lot of sense.

deleted

I checked and i have lib32-glibc installed along with some others lib32 libraries, it may have been a dependency for it or something else… i don’t truly remember.
All i know is that i installed the printer/scanner this way on 3 computers with manjaro, and it worked on all.
I used this because i could not had the scanner working when i installed the AUR printer driver.

This article seems to be out of date and the PKGBUILD doens’t look like the ones you can download from the AUR currently like brother-mfc-j1205w.

It built fine. Whether it works, I don’t know as I don’t own this printer. Right, this particular model is not in AUR so PKGBUILD converts the .deb to .zst

This isn’t much of a help, then, i’m afraid. I don’t think it’s a good idea to post a PKGBUILD if you can’t verify whether it solves the issue.

I think you could figure out why it was installed using pactree from the pacman-contrib package. Just out of curiosity whether it was installed already so your approach for the brother installation worked or if the dependency was in the deb package and this script resolved it. The point is without the lib32-glibc the brother printer driver can’t work and lib32 needn’t be installed normally since 32bit is long gone.

This could also explain it because this installs the lib32-glibc as dependency.

Have it your way. I deleted the post.

But there are two tools in the AUR for converting an .rpm or a .deb into an ALPM package.

  • debtap
  • rpmtoarch

Well conversion is part of it but because the devil is sometimes in the details (and debian or fedora aren’t really arch) you can find additionally sort of “patches” in the PKGBUILDs (not only for the brother printers but generally) to make things work on the arch system. Not always but sometimes.

The printer i have MFC-1910W is rather old 2014, so no MOPRIA compatible.
The script last update is from 2025 but the deb packages on the download page are from 2014, that’s surely why they do need a 32 bit library.
I tried to install the printer in a virtual machine with the script and i could print and scan.
The driver needs the “lib32-glibc” (and DPKG package for installation) only to work (not installed by the script).
I could install the library with pamac, it’s in the Manjaro core repository.

I know, but if all else fails, it’s worth a try. That’s why those two PKGBUILDs exist.

I should blame Brother instead - they crafted software for Windows, but not for Linux.

I found, in the AUR, software for the Brother DCP-T230 and installed that - did you try the same?

We have cups, which works quite well with my Brother - though I had to jiggle some config to enable a few preferences (like the rear feed which I couldn’t select before).

brscan5 supports scanning.

Generic brother-mfc-* may work, like the j825dw, j985dw…

But there’s also debtap and rpmextract for the exact rpm/deb packages.

But you’re right, Brother sucks for this - and for only providing rpm and deb and no source code.

This isn’t a Linux fault, and I’m sure you’re aware that nothing works with Windblows if you don’t install drivers.

You can also open cups in the browser:

http://localhost:631/printers/?

So overall I’m happy, I saved not buying the WiFi printer - 2480 THB instead of paying 3450 THB (65 Euro instead of 90.36 Euro) - not a great deal of money considering it comes with ink (4 bottles worth 26 Euro, leaving the cost of the printer at a ridiculous 39 Euro - the same as the cheap printers of old that came with a tiny ink reservoir and very expensive replacements).

Cheer up, it’s likely do-able… but you have to step away from ‘why didn’t this get sorted for me’ and work out if anyone worked it out, and if you can fix it yourself.

debtap filename.deb
sudo pacman -U filename.pkg.tar.zst

Actually this seems to support airprint a.k.a. ipp and should work without drivers. At least the printing part. Are you sure you have everything printer related? Manjaro-printing? Cups? Avahi running?

If it’s MOPRIA compatible printer then it may be just a firewall ports issue, on your PC or router.

MOPRIA needs 2 or 3 ports (5353 UDP, 631 TCP and perhaps 3702 UDP) if i remember well (sorry i don’t have actual MOPRIA compatible printer at home to test).

Quite - though I had to edit my ppd file to get everything finished (couldn’t select the rear feed on mine).

It’s great now, previously when printing from the rear feed (by design) you had to go press a button on the printer, but it ignores this now so I can print straight from the desktop when I want to do card printing or just pull A4 paper from the tray.

I’m not saying it was easy, or simple - the config file is long and not entirely transparent, but with a bit of aissistance I filtered out the hallucinations and (with the aid of backups) didn’t stray too far from the path.

Took me 90 minutes total.
