Broken sound KDE Plasma

Dear friends.
I have got issue with sound after installing Tenacity. I did not see that I may do the same with audacity, that I had already installed and suddenly sound did not work. I needed to record a short message, in a slightly better quality, and other sound recorders did not convince me as they have had noise in the background.
Even after reinstalling or uninstalling both, when I try to play any videos, there is no sound or (VLC player e would shut down - i think of problem with affected API). Even the same is happening in other user profile. I am really struggling with errors I had with profiles for last year, so I got better in creating new profiles and moving my links, so I created a new profile, but the same issue came back after a day of using it.

I tried pacman -Syu, and seems to find a lot of errors, but on next run all seemed to be repaired. I did try to remove orphan files, not sure if those have been removed or not. Not sure If I may find similar article, I tried to search for problems with alsa, that is not working, but nothing I was able to conclude from it.

What shall update here to be able to move forward, plz?

Dear friends.
I am posting this issue that I did not get solved. I was looking for solutions. It looks that issue is that I have two different services running in the same time, that I should not have. One is pipewire other is pulseaudio. I believed I was having firstly installed PulseAudio (so I don’t know which to remove), but I really dont know. Issue happend after installing app for recording sound. I lost youtube videos and vlc stopped working too. Lately I removed the Pulse audio, and youtube came back, and VLC seems to depene on some pulse plugin too. However I lost a control panel to control the sound/volume-profile as I use to have next to clock from system tray panel. Update the system, also did not help. I did aditionally instaled plasma*pa pavucontrol and pipewire-pulse

I also don know if it is connected, but it seems that I have issues to play youtube viedos, and youtube is telling that I should restart my device. Also an OBS app which was previously well recording my screen has got issues and is not working any more, for unknown reasons. The plugins does not seem to work.

I guess it is all connected to dependendcies regarding soudn system and after update it was maybe tranferred even to video dependencies. What is weired is that I do not have Server name.

Is it correct if I disable the pipewire and try to remove the pipewire-alsa, pipewire media session, and wireplumbrer?when I tried to remove them I realized that OBS is using PIPWERE, so I guess it should be pulseaudio to remove. I am really mixed. What should I do?

Is /tmp/alsa-info.txt.DQd5DCAK8A needed for getting me help?

I tried also:
mv -v ~/.config/yt-dlg ~/.config/yt-dlg.bak
mv: cannot stat '/home/soil_guy/.config/yt-dlg': No such file or directory

here is status:

I could stop service but couldnot disable nor remove all pipewire connected services.

I tried to disable the pipewire, but was not possible, becasue it did not recognize –disabled
i DELETED THIS AS IT HAS GOT SOLVED ALREADY
`systemctl --user status pulseaudio `

At the end I decided The probably pipewire was the one I was originaly having, I did removed the PulseAudio, and ended up having Youtube videos possible to watchagain.I have still remained with not possible to use VLC, OBS - plugins which should work with pipewire,I manage to install pipewire-plse back to be able to controlvolume, but obs has stillsome issue with video plugin… that I need to investigate deeper

Hi @pBp_destiny

Could you please fix the formatting in all of your posts (above).

  • MiniHowTo Instructions follow.

Thanks.

[MiniHowTo] Present code or command output

Note: Grave accent (or, backtick) characters are used. :eyes:

For inline code or to show a single command:

  • please follow this simple example: code here.

For multi-line command output:

  • place text beween two rows of three (```) backtick characters to form a scrollable text box, or …
  • use the </> button in the Compose window to achieve the same result.

The empty row between these rows of backtick characters is where to paste any multi-line command output (such as inxi).

An example of a pre-formatted text enclosure:

What is a Quark?

A. In Physics, an elementary particle and fundamental constituent of matter.
B. A character from the Star Trek: "Deep Space Nine" television series.
C. A soft, creamy, usually unsalted cheese traditional to central Europe.

Thank you for making an attempt at tidying your posts.

I believe @nikgnomic should be able to help you when he is next online. Make sure to remind him, if he doesn’t.

Regards.

For VLC I suggest open Preferences Ctrl+P and click Reset Preferences

To check active audio playback streams from VLC or OBS to pipewire-pulse:

pactl list sink-inputs

and output from pipewire-pulse to Intel Comet Lake PCH-LP cAVS device

pactl list sinks

thank you the VLC and OBS are working now. I still have to look at some dependencies, SO i do not have definite close to topic, but It help to reinstall PulseAudio plugins and to do few updates and reset the preferencies at VLC. Iam not familiar witch pactl. I want to learn about it how I may be able to use it, before I will apply it, but I guess at this moment there is no risk and not even installed by default on system.I have seen some similar app was providing similar function visually, but I thought it is more for people who do sound processing withmultiple outputs. I think it was> ProjectM visualiztion but it was from PulseAudio,so I guess it would not be compatible.

pactl commands work on both pulseaudio and pipewire-pulse audio servers

Thank you for feedback. It took me longer because in the meantime I was trying to solve the issue that popup with installation of Invoiceninja web app on Apache server. I still do not have it solved, because it seems that the REACT JS component is not working, I tried to install some required files for React, including Python (to get venv for testing some app). It look as if some of the installation has messed up again the way how profile is assigned to soundcard. It is quite weired because now the numbers of sources instead of being 0 or 1 are 1569 and 1570
Python interpreter could possibly have done this?
here are my tests results:

Could this be wrong?
for completion I Insert the outputs of sink-inputs, which does not seem to be chanched, on CLI but when I look them up in pavucontrol I do not see tham as choices ofHDMI, instead there is menu choice for PRO, which involves several profiles, but none of them seems to activate HDMI to Samsung TV.
pactl list sink-inputs does not give me any result

Any suggestions please? I will try to look at the Python/react again, what was actually installed.

Please post more information to show available audio profiles:

pamac message Checking for package with missing dependencies... is one of the post-transaction hooks... after reinstall of pavucontrol, so is probably not related to issues with audio system. pavucontrol is written in C++ and does not require python packages from AUR; and it is just an audio mixer GUI: Reinstalling will not help with a problem in the audio server.

seem that the profile exists. I am surprised to see number 42. loks like a lot of divices this computer. I have done yesterday system update again, (and probably after reinstall of python packages, and removing python v2.-that was only needed for the app I wanted to test) it looks that i agcan see profiles to activate sound on computer. SO I don know what did it happend, seems quite fragile, but I am happy tosee the profile list again and willtest them today.

Te OBS will probably be an independent problem, because they have changed the way how software works now, It dos create an individual instnaces for each registered scene and I have to assign them on every restartr (sth. I did not needed to do before - and ofcourse when I had several instances, I never know which scene source it is asking for as it does not says), so I hope it will be working and solved with n ew version of OBS, and it wopld remmember scene sources sd defined, without neededing to reassign.

In any case willd omore testing today.

Thanks for feedback on Pavucontrol reinstall.

Data confirms onboard audio card is using pro-audio profile, that uses pipewire-jack instead of pipewire-pulse audio server

Card profile can be changed in pavucontrol --tab=5 Configuration tab or a pactl command

To use HDMI output to Samsung TV for stereo audio playback, change profile to Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output
Or this command:

pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:hdmi-stereo

To use HDMI output and microphone input change profile to Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input
Or this command:

pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:hdmi-stereo+input:analog-stereo

PipeWire Wiki - FAQ - What is the Pro-Audio profile
In addition to the PulseAudio profiles, all audio cards now have an extra “Pro Audio” profile. Selecting this profile does the following things:

  • Exposes all the devices available on the card.
  • All devices from a card are assumed to share the same clock and so the adaptive resamplers are disabled.
  • Exposes the maximum number of channels on all devices.
  • The channels are labelled as AUX0, AUX1, …
  • Disables the hardware mixers, it only enables software volume/mute.
  • A session manager will configure streams to stereo and route to the first two channels (AUX0 and AUX1).
  • Since 0.3.81 it will be configured to use IRQ based wakeup and links the related ALSA devices together.

This profile is meant to be used on audio cards with:

  • More than 8 channels for input or output. Channel assignment is probably wrong for these cards.
  • Cards with many instruments connected to each input. It makes sense to handle each channel as a separate unrelated stream.
  • Output Cards with many unrelated outputs, like speakers on the first 2 channels, headphones on the second channel-pair, additional speakers on the other channels.

For consumer cards with stereo or surround configurations, it does not make sense to use this Profile.

thanks for feedback. I am happy with the strategy that Arch linux comunity has settled regarding packages.
It is embarassing how often I would install something in order that I wish to work with a new app, and I loose sound as result of this doing, and get my flow of work stagnated. Would be great If I may find anantifragile solution in the wiki manual some kind of script.
I remember when I was managing windows. we use to have script to reasign allthe basic functionalities of windows to it’s default or most last state (except backup) and was working pretty well to solve a lot of small issues. I hope I would manage to find some for doing similar thing for the sound as this issue is reapearing for me for years now. Do you know by chance of something that could do this check and reassas if needed, plz?

Seeing that you’re on Plasma, kmix seems to fit the bill of what you’re asking for.

Thank you. kmix seems to be a prety good equyalizer control. Does not seem to have any dependencies in conflict, so I will give it a try
I will for my future revisit inset again a full inxi output, to remember where my system has been last time.

For KDE it would be better to use pavucontrol-qt instead of pavucontrol (GTK4)

ok will install pavucontrol-qt. Thank you.

PipeWire uses wireplumber session/policy manager to save audio configuration changes to ~/.local/state/wireplumber/

To reset WirePlumber:

  1. Stop the user service for WirePlumber:

    systemctl --user stop wireplumber.service

  2. Delete ~/.local/state/wireplumber/ folder and contents

    rm -r ~/.local/state/wireplumber/

  3. Restart the user service to create a new folder

    systemctl --user restart wireplumber.service
