Brand New Install of XFCE Manjaro >>> gvfsd[1273] Crashes Causing Desktop Freeze

Help me Tom Cruise!

Just installed a fresh copy of Manjaro XFCE on a laptop and the Desktop freezes and doesn’t allow me to shutdown appropriately…

I looked up generic XFCE help and they talked about a overlay scroll bar but I don’t know what to do with that. Help me Obi-Wan you’re my only hope!

Take a look at these threads. Maybe it will help in your case. If not, it is easily reversible:

If @jrichard326 's solution does not work, you seem to have a NAS mounted. What happens if you unmount the NAS before shutting down?

If still the same, please provide the output of:

smartctl --all /dev/sda

:crossed_fingers:

Hi guys and thanks for the quick replies!

So @jrichard326 I don’t think it was the actual scrollbar as I did the temporary export of variables with no success…

@Fabby I noted that my Trash folder wasn’t setup within:
~/.local/share/Trash
Interesting but I don’t think this was the issue…

@Fabby I think you may be on to something. Here’s a real signature that I learned lately. I’m fine and open normally within Thunar when I have NOT selected a folder located on the NAS mount. As soon as I connect to the NAS mount (by clicking on a folder within the mount) the trash folder is loaded with many many files that are not present on the local machine. I’m mounting the NAS drive with the following parameters within /etc/fstab

//192.168.1.XXX/share /mnt/afs cifs file_mode=0755,dir_mode=0755,user,uid=1000,credentials=/home/username/.smbcredentials,noauto,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=10,_netdev 0 0

/swapfile none swap defaults 0 0

I saw your post above and I created a 4GB “/swapfile” (the second line above). Still no joy on this yet, but I feel like we’re getting close!

also I did a $: sudo umount /mnt/afs with no success…

I get umount: /mnt/afs: target is busy.

More details…

With df I see both the remote share address and the mounted location. I see no issues with df…

I did a lsof /mnt/afs and it returned nothing…

fuser /mnt/afs returns nothing…

smartctl looks good!

:+1:

That means that files are open. Close all applications and terminals and then open a new terminal and dismount and try again, please.

Lemme reboot and come up clean

Please also provide a new full inxi?

It is something about the mount! The immediate sudo umount /mnt/afs after reboot (prior to actually accessing the files in the mount) prohibits the desktop freeze.

Looking deeper into the mount, I have 1.7G of files in my .Trash1000 folder within the mount…

Do you think gvfs if freaking out about that? (P.S. A lot of pictures are in there… Thumbnailing?)

Can you do an fsck on the disk from inside the NAS? (that’s normally running Linux too)

If that’s not possible, remove the disk, hook it up directly and check that way.

:crossed_fingers:

deleting the contents of the .Trash1000 folder within the mounted share was what we throwing off the gvfs!

More exhaustively I performed the following:

  1. Same mount as displayed with /etc/fstab above.
  2. Navigate to /mnt/afs/.Trash1000
  3. $: rm -r *

@Fabby I really apprciate the spot! Also @jrichard326 I appreciate your speed in reply and great ideas as well! Continue on Brotheren!
