Bootloader error persists

I’m encountering a persistent bootloader problem despite trying the fixes recommended in various threads on this problem. I’ve disabled secure boot in the bios and I’ve reformatted to GPT in gparted. And I’ve tried what I can understand (which isn’t much!) from the wiki on this topic.
But I still get the dreaded bootloader error when trying to install onto an Acer laptop. Messages like “grub install returned non-zero exit status 1”, “Could not prepare Boot variable: interrupted system call grub-install”, “efi bootmgr failed to register the boot entry.”
Surely it shouldn’t be this problematic to install Manjaro from the official image? What am I missing?
Any help gratefully received, otherwise I’ll never get this laptop off the live usb.

Are you sure your firmware is supporting UEFI?

In case you tried installing in UEFI mode, have you disabled Legacy boot (CSM)?

Can you boot a Manjaro live ISO and post

Next time you try to install using Calamares start it in debug mode by:

I tried the Calamares -d but after the ‘set keyboard’ stage I couldn’t get further because the ‘Next’ button was greyed out.

I think the only options you have is either to use Manjaro Architect or a manual installation or to think about using Arch as I don’t think Calamares can install on mmc. :man_shrugging:

Thanks. Is Calamares a new installer for Manjaro? This laptop has successfully run Manjaro as its only OS for about four years, but had become very cluttered up with redundant software etc and I decided the best way to clean it up was to clear the entire memory and start afresh with a new install.
I now remember that when I installed Manjaro the first time I came across this bootload snag, and with help from the forum managed to solve it - if only I could remember how!

Had a good search there but couldn’t find such topic from me - maybe the solution last time came from elsewhere, I really can’t remember. What does strike me, though, is how often installs fail because of bootloader probs, and how many different solutions are suggested.
Meanwhile I can’t get any of the various suggestions to fix the prob on my machine, and I’m stuck with the laptop only working from the live usb stick.

I think you are mixing efi and bios - and this is often caused by the firmware’s setting named compatibility mode.

The error message itself indicates you are trying to install an EFI system when the system has been loaded as BIOS.

This causes endless confusion - and one method to around it is to - ensure you know the mode used to load the system and then select the appropriate installation method in Calamares.

Following some earlier advice I’m pretty sure I established that the system is EFI. How can I check this again?

If you are certain it is an efi system - maybe cleaning up your efi boot entries will help.

run efibootmgr from a terminal to list the registered entries - then delete entries not needed using efibootmgr (as root) from the the terminal.

Which of these should I delete? I guess the last two - any others?

I’ve tried installing other linux distros (I’d much prefer Manjaro if poss because my other two computers run on Manjaro and I’m used to it, but I’m getting desperate!). They all fail at the same point: the grub-install stage. A typical message was “Executing ‘grub-install /dev/mmcblk0’ failed.”
I’ve trawled through so many posts on this issue, have checked everything I can understand to check and carried out the various suggestions in the threads, all to no avail. I can’t help thinking this is a relatively simple breakdown of communication in the installation process - the boot requirement not pointing to the right grub file or something.
Any ideas or pointers for a non-techie?

Another observation: In the initial boot menu there’s an option “Detect EFI bootloaders” and if click that I get “(hd1,gpt1)/efi/Manjaro/grubx64.efi”
Does that tell us anything useful?

As Wollie suggested, I’m now trying to install with Manjaro-Architect, and the process seemed to be going well until it froze with the error message “grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda1.”
But sda1 is the USB installation stick - why does it need to find a GRUB drive there?
And more importantly, how can I progress the Architect installation past this sticking point?

I’ve now tried various things from diverse posts - too many to keep track of! But things look different now. If I try booting without the live stick inserted, I now get:
“Failed to start Coldplug all udev devices”.
If I just wait for ages, I then get the following:
Timed out waiting for device /dev/mccblk0p1
Dependency failed for /boot/efi
Dependency failed for Local File Systems
I am told I am in emergency mode and I’m invited to press Ctrl-D to continue. I do that and up pops the Manjaro opening screen but the touch pad doesn’t work and a plugged-in usb mouse also doesn’t work.
What to do? Thanks

After trying everything suggested here and elsewhere, and finally suspecting that the laptop’s internal mmc had gone faulty, I’ve now installed Manjaro onto an inserted micro-SD card.
On booting, an initial error message pops up saying there is “no such device” followed by a very long number, but that quickly disappears and then the system boots up and appears to be working perfectly well.
