Boot-Process does not reach graphical screen in X11 or Wayland

Sorry @brahma, did not respect your code-marking.

# ldconfig returns nothing. What to do next?

just try to reinstall glibc:
pacman -S glibc lib32-glibc
if there are errors post them here

also post output from:
mhwd-kernel -li

and from logs:
journalctl -b-1 -p5 --no-pager

all done in chroot; here the results:

 manjaro-chroot -a                                                                              āœ”

post also output from:
cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

yes: this may be aimed at finding out whether the microcode is being loaded

Just something that caught my eye, but I don’t know the significance of it:

…

… something in /etc/fstab?

and there are a few more errors a few lines below.

shouldn’t /tmp be empty, prior to tmpfs being mounted to it?

should /run/polkit-1/rules.d even exist?

similar to: /usr/local/share/polkit-1/rules.d - should it even be there?

Thank you! Results from virtual konsole:

# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
MODULES=()

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the

The rest of the posting from @Nachlese I did not understand …

It was just speculation, based upon what I see in my own system.
These directories (mentioned as errors in your log) do NOT exist in my system as well,
but nothing want’s to access them either
(so: I see no such errors).

@brahma might know

As for /tmp - it will not be empty in a running system - that is normal.
But the message in your log said
that it wasn’t empty to begin with
That can only be checked from the outside, when the system is not running, by booting from USB, for example - and mounting / and looking at /tmp

I didn’t want to interfere - I’ll go back to just watching the thread.

ps:
I’d minimize the possible sources of error
by commenting everything not strictly necessary from /etc/fstab
(that would be just the first three or four lines.
EFI, swap, / and /home - swap should not need to be mentioned, it should work without that fstab entry)

And I wouldn’t use /media as a mount point.
Create a dedicated one instead.
/media is different in Manjaro than it is in Ubuntu - but it is probably still a temporary directory which disappears and is recreated with every reboot - but I did not check that.

pps:
I just checked that:
/media doesn’t exist by default in Manjaro - you have to create it yourself before you can use it

are you in virtual box? so manjaro is not actually installed?

No, for sure not.

ok… so you have several kernels installed? did you tried booting with different one? if not try boot with the 5.15 and then with the 6.1…

also add amdgpu to early loading:
from chroot:
nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
and edit the MODULES section to look like this:

MODULES=(amdgpu)

save it with ctrl+x press Y, then enter and update it:
mkinitcpio -P

also check in your installed home directory, open dolphin, go to your installed home directory, check unhide files (ctrl+h) and look for an .Xauthority files(s) and delete it/them if there are more than one…

reboot and test with the different kernels…

Thank you, this is what I did:

$ sudo mhwd-kernel --list
boot pressing ESC
grub menu: switched to 5.15 --> same issue
boot pressing ESC
grub menu: switched to 6.1 --> same issue

$ manjaro-chroot -a
nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
added: MODULES=(amdgpu)
$ mkinitcpio -P
reboot --> same issue

$ manjaro-chroot -a
dolphin
   /home/myname
   show hidden files
   deleted one .Xauthority file
reboot --> same issue

boot pressing ESC
grub menu: switched to 5.15 --> same issue

ok, try adding this kernel parameter from chroot:
nano /etc/default/grub
and in this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the quotes you add the parameter:
amdgpu.dc=0
dont remove anything from there, just add it to existing parameters, then save it with ctrl+x press Y, then enter and update it:
update-grub

reboot…
if you still have issues, try what nachlese is suggesting by uncomenting the fstab entries:

after that run:
mkinitcpio -P

if you still have issues post again logs:
journalctl -b-1 -p5 --no-pager

Thank you, this is what I did:

$ manjaro-chroot -a
nano /etc/default/grub
in line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the quotes added parameter:
amdgpu.dc=0
as first entry.

# update-grub

reboot- → same issue

In an already difficult and murky situation, you should try to be precise with your feedback of what you did and what responses you got to commands.

This:

cannot be true.

Two issues with that:

  • dolphin does not run in chroot, where you only have a TTY
  • reboot from within chroot does not work

Of course you can reboot the system you used to get into chroot
and you can run Dolphin in that system,
but then the path /home/myname is wrong.

You should remove all .Xauthority files - in case there was more than one.

Incidentally:
I don’t even have an .Xauthority in my virtual machine, even though Plasma is running under xorg there.

Does the directory /media even exist?
It’s not present by default …

You are right, sorry for that.

In the first session I had chroot running and could not start dolphin. Then I started Dolphin from the home screen and selected the drive /home/myname. There was one .Xauthority file which I deleted.

In an actual session I started MANJARO from USB-stick and DOLPHIN from the home screen and selected the drive /home/myname. Actually there is no .Xauthority file.

you can revert your fstab back…

and post the logs

and do you have corectrl installed?
pacman -Qs corectrl
if dont, do not install it

This is what I did:

$ manjaro-chroot -a
nano /etc/default/grub
in line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the quotes REMOVED parameter:
amdgpu.dc=0
# update grub

well have no idea what to de next…
you have installed some widgets/addons and some sus packages in the pacman -Qm output… lets remove them:
pacman -R plasma-simplemenu conky-lua-nv lib32-libva-vdpau-driver libva-vdpau-driver
also reinstall the driver:
mhwd -r pci video-linux
install it back:
mhwd -a pci free 0300

reboot and test

Thaynk you @brahma, sorry for the delay: Several meeting took my full attention.
Did it now step by step:

conky-lua-nv   --> same issue
plasma-simplemenu --> same issue, last boot event Starting TLP system startup/shutdown. Typically last entry is Finished target TLP ...
lib32-libva-vdpau-driver libva-vdpau-driver --> same isse, last boot event is Finished target TLP ...

mhwd -r pci video-linux                   --> 11 Packages removed
mhwd -a pci free 0300 # install it back --> 13 Packages installed

But same issue again.
Is it worth to remove all xf86-video- packages*:

$ pamac list -i | grep xf86-video-
xf86-video-amdgpu                         23.0.0-2                    extra     170,2 KB
xf86-video-ati                            1:22.0.0-2                  extra     488,1 KB
xf86-video-intel                          1:2.99.917+939+g4a64400e-1  extra     2,3 MB
xf86-video-nouveau                        1.0.18-1                    extra     216,0 KB

Actually the machine is running for about half an hour in virtual konsole; I did not do anything there for at least last 20 minutes.
Suddenly I see messages ext4-fs error device nvme0n1p4 ...This is /home
Could this be in connection with the sreen issue? What to do?
