Boot issues after updating in testing branch

This update was a disaster for me: stuck at Lenovo (motherboard) logo when trying to boot later, no boot menu (EFI), no way to boot at all.

Using Live USB to chroot and re-installing GRUB or kernels had no effect (with 3 LTS kernels). Upgrading from Testing to Unstable had no effect either. Only downgrading to Stable worked.

This had never happened to me in the 9 years I’ve used Manjaro Testing (which means a high quality). No idea which package(s) may have caused it but I was able to narrow it down to these (long story):

upgraded linux-api-headers (6.16-1 -> 6.16-2)
upgraded libtirpc (1.3.6-2 -> 1.3.7-1)
upgraded systemd-libs (257.8-4 -> 257.9-1)
upgraded libxml2 (2.14.5-1 -> 2.14.6-1)
upgraded grub (2:2.12.r350.g0e367796-1 -> 2:2.12.r359.g19c698d1-2)
upgraded hwdata (0.398-1 -> 0.399-1)
upgraded pcre2 (10.45-1 -> 10.46-1)
upgraded install-grub (2:2.12.r350.g0e367796-5 -> 2:2.12.r359.g19c698d1-2)
upgraded iw (6.9-1 -> 6.17-1)
upgraded libffi (3.5.1-1 -> 3.5.2-1)
upgraded libnghttp2 (1.66.0-1 -> 1.67.0-1)
upgraded systemd (257.8-4 -> 257.9-1)
upgraded linux61 (6.1.149-3 -> 6.1.151-1)
upgraded linux66 (6.6.103-3 -> 6.6.105-1)
upgraded pacman-mirrors (5.0-1 -> 5.1-1)
upgraded systemd-sysvcompat (257.8-4 -> 257.9-1)
upgraded update-grub (2:2.12.r350.g0e367796-1 -> 2:2.12.r359.g19c698d1-2)
upgraded xfsprogs (6.15.0-1 -> 6.16.0-2)

@Tsujan, to narrow down your issue I would reccomend to open a normal support thread, providing the usual requested system info.

To make sure that it’s reproducible for me, I changed the branch to Testing again today:

sudo pacman-mirrors --api --set-branch testing
sudo pacman-mirrors -f
sudo pacman -Syu

Which resulted in

Then I shut down the laptop, started it, and the same thing happened: no boot menu (EFI) and no way to boot, only the Lenovo logo.

Again, by using Live USB, I switched to the stable branch and the problem disappeared. Worrying that the same thing might happen in the stable branch later…

I moved your post to support area.

Please provide output of

inxi -cv8

and provide information about your boot situation, i.e. do you dual boot, have you any encrypted partitions etc.

Also be aware that after changing branch / refreshing mirrorlist you should use

sudo pacman -Syyuu

to update and fully sync.

To that end, links are provided (below) - Please use them.

Be prepared to provide outputs from various commands when asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Waiting for someone to blindly ask questions is also counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – Instead, please help others to make informed suggestions, based on information you provide.

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

First thanks for your reply!

I have no dual boot and no encrypted partition. Now, I’m in the stable branch, which has no problem.

Also be aware that after changing branch…

Yes, of course :slight_smile:

My wild guess is that something may be wrong with one of the grub packages in testing and unstable (grub, install-grub, update-grub), because everything else is related to the system, while I couldn’t start to boot — as I said, there was nothing to boot into :wink: The Lenovo logo stayed there forever without any activity when I was in testing/unstable branch.

Sorry that I can’t do more tests for a while, coding under Manjaro for LXQt…

That is strange - I think - because I use unstable branch

I can see the grub version on stable is slightly older on stable branch - the fact that Manjaro differs from Arch is known.

 $ mbn info grub -q

Yes, it’s strange, indeed! This is beyond my expertise, but do you think there’s any possibility other than grub in this case?

BTW, I noticed that our grub in testing is 2.12.r359.g19c698d1-2, while that of Arch is 2.12.r359.g19c698d12-1. I don’t know if that matters.

I wonder if this suggestion might be of any assistance to your situation.

A post was split to a new topic: I have a similar problem

I wonder if …

Thanks for caring and replying, but I already know about it. I may be a simple developer/coder, but I’m not new to Manjaro, having used it for 9 years (the first two years with an Asus laptop and then with this Lenovo). And I really appreciate the hard work behind Manjaro, which has been very reliable distro.

I have a similar problem…

Maybe related, but it doesn’t seem to be the same problem, because I can’t boot to my only system.

There is a missing part. To help we would need to see the complete log - all the things cut off with the 3 dots .... Because there are also post transaction hooks, things that update the kernel and boot part. And since normally nobody touches the boot loader installation itself, there is no reason why the boot loader should stop working. So we need the full log and we need to know whether because of the message

you ran any of these commands.

There is a missing part.

In the original upgrade of Manjaro Testing that resulted in the problem the first time, it was like always (as far as I remember):

I never saw this one so far. Does anyone know about why this is run? Shouldn’t there only be 99-grub.hook which generates the configuration?

Can you try selecting the volume in the UEFI/BIOS? In case the boot order was somehow changed

What is the output of

sudo efibootmgr

Another possibility is that there was an uncompleted or malfunctional update process. Personally, I would

  • install 6.12-LTS kernel,
  • update the mirrorlist,
  • then update normally again with full sync,
  • then switch branch to testing,
  • update using forcing to reinstall all packages,
  • afterwards manually restore the boot loader,
  • before rebooting.

Let’s see if a reboot then works, properly.

I never saw this one so far

Those lines have been in my pacman.log since 2024-09-14.

This is caused by installing the install-grub script recently recommended.

The update process went smoothly and finished without problem, as usual (I always check the terminal). I shut down the computer and went to bed. The next day, I saw the surprise :wink:

install 6.12-LTS kernel

I’d tried it (Live USB + chroot) the same day the problem happened, both with Testing and with Unstable.

afterwards manually restore the boot loader

Did that too.

Installing this package shouldn’t trigger an attempt to automatically reinstall the bootloader. This is the real cause why TsuJan can’t boot. If the user really wants to reinstall the boot loader he has to do it himself because only he knows his device.
