Bluetooth suddenly quit working

Good day,

I left my computer alone for a day connected to a headset and when I came back, it just stopped working. The remembered devices are gone as well. I’ve rebooted, tried using a live environment, and tried kernel 6.1 and 6.8, to no avail. Here’s my system information:

It looks to me like a hardware failure at first glance, but the inxi dump reports a Bluetooth controller? Weird stuff happening here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Just to be clear, which is it - your computer or headset - that just stopped working? (I’ll assume it was the latter).

It very well might be. These potential issues may have contributed.
This suggests you have no battery. Are you running it from mains power?

Having no Swap partition or Swap file (as an alternative) is never a good thing (even if it’s barely used)

If the machine attempted to hibernate during your extended absence, that could cause issues when not actually having Swap space to hibernate to.

Typically, many devices are turned off in preparation to hibernate. Perhaps this gives a direction to investigate further.

Good luck.

My computer is the one that just stopped working.

It’s a desktop computer. It’s running from the wall.

I prefer having my swap file on a separate internal hard drive (/dev/sdb),which I have done before, but less than a week ago I reinstalled for separate reasons, and when I select swap to file in the installer, in puts in on the root drive. I just forgot about it. I’ll fix it soon.

I’ve never explicitly made my computer hibernate, but the power button has been blinking, with the display not getting any input and the lights on keyboard and mouse when I leave it on the login screen for a while. Is that hibernation or sleep?

Thank you, for both your assistance and words. I appreciate it greatly.

Ah, so it is.

It’s possibly defaulting to hibernation. Whether its a swap partition or file, your INXI output shows neither is working.

Considering you don’t have swap correctly configured, any attempt to hibernate should fail. And yes, the blinking is typically an indication of a sleep states prior to hibernating.

If you want hibernation, you’ll (technically) need enough space to hold as much as your RAM (for example if you have 32G of RAM, then 32G of Swap should be available to hibernate). Whatever data is held in RAM must have somewhere to go when the machine hibernates (it can’t stay in RAM) and the Swap space is the destination. As you were previously using a separate partition for Swap, you should probably reconfigure it to do the same as before. Of course, if you don’t wish to use hibernation at all, you can likely allocate less Swap.

I suggest to focus on configuring your Swap and then your power saving options. Try a few different settings and see whichever suits.

Cheers.

Swap is now on.

swapon -show
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/data/secondary/swapfile file 16777212 0 -2

Obviously, Bluetooth still isn’t working; I didn’t expect it to after adding swap. However, hibernate now shows up on the superkey menu.

That’s a step in the right direction, at least. I can’t help with blutooth configuration, etc (I use desktops on a LAN and have no need of it), but no doubt someone else will chime in if you post a few logs etc.

Cheers.

@Warp
If you have a Bluetooth-stick, may try to unplug and reconnect it.
If it still dont work, may remove and reinstall anything Bluetooth-related.
You can do that by looking ie at octopi for blue and reinstall anything, what you can see bluetooth-related.
And search at octopi, since a packet search at pamac dont work proper anymore, at least at my system.

I had the same problems a few times, that suddenly my bluetooth connected device like headset or phones did not work proper anymore.

Sometimes it was enough to remove the devices from the list and let them search new at bluetooth-manager, sometimes i had to complete reinstall it.

I assume, its a problem from address assignment since it gets new addresses after updates, but its my guess.

Thanks for your advice. I’ll be on a business trip till Thursday so I’ll get back to you then. Again, thank you.

I’m back. It was working for a few minutes, then stopped working again. I reinstalled the following packages that seemed to be related to bluetooth to no avail:

bluez bluez-libs pipewire-pulse bluez-utils bluez-qt5 fwupd pipewire-audio

Here’s the complete kernel buffer, starting from the first mention of Bluetooth:

I unplugged the Bluetooth device into other ports after it stopped working but nothing changed.

When the Bluetooth started working again, the previously connected to devices were back. It worked flawlessly up until I stopped getting audio in my headphones. I tried to restart the Bluetooth daemon but after doing so it was back to the previously stated situation.

So it worked straight after starting the pc then stopped working?

When your headset is connected, you can rightclick at the at the speaker symbol, then look at the bottom, where it says ‘mixer’.
A new window will pop up, and right side is configuration, where your Headset should be listed.
There is a pull down menu, where you can choose a profile. May try both of them, also right hand the codec, if it will connect proper.

For the installed packages, i additional got manjaro-bluetooth pulseaudio-bluetooth,
but looks like you dont use pulseaudio, but pipewire. So maybe you try to add manjaro-bluetooth.

Once i used only pipewire too, but bluetooth did not really work with it, so i installed pulseaudio,
even it seems its not really supported anymore, but at least, my bluetooth worked with it.

After hibernating for an hour or two, it worked again. All the profiles I tried worked. I installed manjaro-bluetooth after it started working again. I do use pipewire, so I didn’t bother installing pulseaudio-bluetooth. However, after about 15 minutes of use, it stopped working again. I have yet to reboot. Here are the logs:

Ok. Lets see if you have any pulseaudo packages left, what are in conflict with pipewire.
Look if you have anything installed from what he mentions and install the packages.

There is a topic already about the same symptoms like yours.
Else, what i have found on the net, its maybe a linux-firmware related problem.

Edit: Another thing what i observed today is interference with other devices.
I managed it, to disconnect my headphones today with an electrical toothbrush.
Mobiles and Wlan work on the same frequency ranges from about 2,4Ghz.
I found an article where it says, to avoide channel 14.
But i could figure, that other devices can interfere with the headphones or receiver too.
Or an dying battery can cause disconnecting too.

It was a hardware problem, I just ended up getting a new Bluetooth adapter and now everything works fine.
