Blender shows no Nvidia Driver after waking up from standby

I think either here or on some Blender forum we discussed this problem already but I’m unable to find that discussion so I have to ask again.

When I boot my machine fresh, Blender works fine. I can select CUDA or Optix from the preferences and it shows up my Nvidia Graphics card.
After I wake the PC from standby, Blender complains that:

No compatible GPUs found for Cycles. Requires NVIDIA GPU with compute capability 3.0

The Nvidia driver is apparently no longer loaded after waking from standby.
If I remember that old discussion well, some config files need to be updated but I can’t remember which ones.

An obvious workaround is to reboot.

Perhaps you might consider hibernation rather than standby, and see if Blender recovers as expected.

Note that to use hibernation effectively a swap partition would need to be configured. There are some who mandate that a swap file would be sufficient for the purpose, however, that has not been my experience.

Reboot is not really a solution as then I have to close all running programs.
(As I know hibernation is also not recommended on SSD drives.)

I have a second PC with Manjaro where I had this problem when I set it up the first time and I got it resolved with the help of one internet forum.
It was many years ago and unfortunately I forgot who and where helped me.
I searched this forum and also Google but I can’t find the solution anymore.
It involved changing some configuration files but I don’t know anymore which one.

check this possible solution from the stable update annoucement:

Many hibernate to a swap partition on an SSD (myself included).

I recall early in the evolution of SSDs there was an occasional argument against it based on supposed lessening of the SSDs lifespan. From my experience of more than a decade of using SSDs, the times I’ve opted to use hibernation have given no cause for concern.

Even now, in 2024, there are those who argue against, as you do. I’m sure there are many in the forum who would offer their opinions also; albeit arguably off-topic for this thread.

Which is why I called it a workaround.

I’m afraid this information in so vague as to be of very little use. What might be useful to those wishing to help (at least for a start) is some system information.

To that end, please provide the command output of:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Something to keep in mind is that your issue may have little to do with whatever you remember from before. In fact, in recent Update announcements there are a few acknowledged issues (with solutions) that might easily describe what you are now experiencing.

One in particular ultimately leads to:

Edit;- And I now see @brahma has linked the Update announcement.

Regarding Hibernation: thanks for your comment with your experience. These warnings (reduced SSD lifespan) are still popping up on all sort of websites and YouTube videos so it’s great to hear “real person” experiences. :slightly_smiling_face:

The use of this information is, that I have a second PC with the same Manjaro stand (both are updated regularly) and that both have experienced this issue (the old one is a RTX3080 and the new one an RTX4090). On the old one it was solved so there was a solution and it was some years ago so it is not related to new kernel or new Manjaro version issues. The little use of this information is that I forgot it how it was solved. (Always make notes…)

Just checked my other system and it shows some differences in the NVidia infos:

  Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.13 with: Xwayland v: 24.1.2
compositor: kwin_x11 driver: X: loaded: N/A failed: nvidia gpu: nvidia

API: EGL v: 1.5 hw: drv: nvidia platforms: device: 0 drv: nvidia device: 2
drv: swrast gbm: drv: kms_swrast surfaceless: drv: nvidia x11: drv: nvidia
    inactive: wayland,device-1

On the old PC the display GPU is listed as: nvidia on the new PC it is: nvidia, nvidia-nvswitch
Also under API there are some differences. So, maybe there is more differences than I thought…

Do you have nvidia-suspend.service, nvidia-resume.service and nvidia-hibernate.service enabled?

I do and blender still detects my GPU after suspend.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA/Tips_and_tricks#Preserve_video_memory_after_suspend

EDIT:

This  seems to be the same (or a similar) issue.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=254983

Here’s the interesting bit:

Okay, after running:

   sudo systemctl enable nvidia-suspend.service

   sudo systemctl enable nvidia-hibernate.service

   sudo systemctl enable nvidia-resume.service

and creating the modprobe file like:

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf

options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
options nvidia NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/run

I suspended and hibernated and the gpu still runs.

Thanks, it works! :+1:
I had to reboot once after writing the config file. After that I left Blender open and put the machine in standby.
After wake up, cycles renders without a problem. Fantastic.
