Blender doesn't start

On my system (kernel 4.19) Blender yet fails to start:

$ blender
Writing: /tmp/blender.crash.txt
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

the issue is known, but what’s the solution? I’d rather not to reinstall it from aur.

The first thing I would recommend is to install a more recent kernel. While 4.19 is technically still supported, the kernel’s graphics subsystem has evolved quite a bit since the 4.19 generation.

I would recommend using either 6.1 or 6.6. Both are LTS releases.

If it is still the same issue as in the thread you linked to, then there are only two solutions… :point_down:

  • install blender through steam; or
  • install the older but still supported LTS version from the AUR.

Thanks, and you think there will be no way to recover the old installation even in the future?

I’m not sure what you mean by “the old installation”. Everything that’s in your home directory is of course recoverable — and you should definitely maintain a backup strategy if you haven’t got one already.

If however you are inquiring as to whether the problem will ever get remedied by upstream — i.e. Arch, which is where we import our blender package from — then your guess is probably as good as mine. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I presume that if enough people — especially so among the Arch-proper user base — are reporting the same problem, then Arch might make an effort at investigating the matter further. :man_shrugging:

If you prefer to use a older version. i recommend/if that program is available as AppImage version.

For ‘old installation’ I meant the Blender package (and its dependecies) from official repository which is currently installed on my system, but that does not launch any longer - I didn’t mean older versions of Blender.
So the problem should be addressed by Arch manteiners, but we don’t know how widespread it is among Arch and Arch-derived distros and hence weather they will estimate worth to spend time on it or not - I will wait for some time yet. Thanks again for the clarification. :slight_smile:
