Black square in upper left corner of screen (sometimes)

I have a fairly new install of Manjaro GNOME on X11. In the normal desktop view, there is a small black square in the upper left corner of the screen (see image below).

This is not a pixel issue, if the screen lock is on, the black square is not there. Also, if I Show All Applications, it goes away.

I can’t figure out what is causing it. I will note, not sure if this is a clue, but when Manjaro starts up the mouse icon is a box, then it turns into an X.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated!

Possibly an extension or theme issue?

I’m thinking it may be related to some widget that itself may have some error … or otherwise something like the chosen icon theme not having a corresponding icon.

I dont use gnome but extensions are a common source of inconsistencies.

Thanks @cscs . Yeah, I tried disabling all extensions, but then the top bar is black. So I can’t see whether it is there or not.

This is the transparent top bar extension I use. I use it on other installs of Manjaro – both on this machine an others – and the problem does not present.
