Black screen with blinking cursor after update

Newish user. Did a careless update yesterday and haven’t been able to boot properly- as with many others I am stuck on a black screen with a blinking cursor.

This is my inxi output:

I have tried the first few steps from here:
/t/how-to-troubleshoot-black-screen-on-boot/119235

  1. There were no additional updates.
  2. startx didn’t return any error messages as far as I can tell.

What should I do next? I was running 5.4.225-1 and tried downgrading to 5.5.81-1 but that didn’t help either.

We don’t know what ‘careless’ means. We don’t know at what point ‘black screen’ happens. Explain things thoroughly if you don’t want 100 random guesses.

What did you do exactly? Post commands and outputs.

As for my random guess: chroot and update everything and reinstall kernels.

I just updated any packages that needed updating, as per a routine alert. That’s worked out fine in the past so I didn’t think anything of it. I was prompted to reboot, so I did. Black screen happens after I hit enter on “Manjaro Linux” as I usually would, but instead of being taken to a screen to enter my password I get a black screen with the blinking underscore.

As per a suggestion from another user on an old thread that I tried to link to above:

sudo pacman-mirrors -f 5
sudo pacman -Syyu

Gave me

:: Synchronizing package databases...
 core downloading...
 extra downloading...
 community downloading...
 multilib downloading...
:: Starting full system upgrade...
 there is nothing to do

Will chrooting delete my locally stored files? Haven’t done it before.

No, why would it? But you don’t need to chroot since I see you can access terminal. Perhaps post logs

journalctl -b --no-pager
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

If you can’t copy paste logs, you can use

<above commands> | tee >(curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io)

and copy them from link you get.

Apparently lightdm has it’s own logs in /var/log/lightdm/*.log so perhaps check and post that too.

Post actual core dump (from journal or coredumpctl). It won’t help much more, but still.

Can’t really give you a solution, beside downgrading lightdm-gtk-greeter (and possibly anything else that depends on it/it depends on). Check what was updated today.

Sorry, I don’t know how to find individual logs or downgrade packages… any help would be appreciated.

I have a same issue with you…
