Black screen on shutdown/restart

Hi, first proper post here, please go easy on me

I recently had to reinstall Manjaro because I managed to kill GRUB (that one is on me).

Whenever I try to shutdown/restart, either through the KDE menu or terminal, my laptop is stuck at a black screen with cursor. I can launch things using my shortcuts, but they don’t open on my screen. I can force shutdown using the power button, but I know that’s a big no-no.

I’d appreciate any suggestions on how to diagnose and fix this. I’d post some logs, but have no idea where to start.

Running the 6.10.11-2 kernel and KDE 6.1.5.

Thanks in advance.

Hello @anon9361,

please take a look in here:

Just from reading through the threads with similar titles/issues I’d say that this is related to a feature in Plasma.
ā€œStart with previous sessionā€ or ā€œrestore / keep previous sessionā€ or a name similar to that.
I don’t use Plasma and can’t advise. I just read about it here many times.
Selecting ā€œstart with empty sessionā€ or however it is named
was the solution for many with your kind of problem.

Read and find those threads and see whether that helps.

Going to settings > session > session restore and selecting ā€œstart with an empty sessionā€ fixed the issue.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

As was noted as the solution in the thread that @kisun directed you to. I have adjusted this thread’s solution accordingly.

This was also clearly listed in the Stable Update Announcement, which you should always check before updating, and before raising a support issue;

the problem and solution was mentioned here:

Cheers.
