Black Screen in the middle of working

I’m running Stable on an ASUS TUF Gaming A17 - an "AMD Ryzen 7 4800H with Radeon Graphics
" - and a Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti. with a second monitor on the HTML Out port (Adapted to VGA) - battery at 100%, always plugged in.

I would say this is a graphic drivers issue because I went mhwd -i video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-455xx-prime - but I’ve tried 450, 440, with no obvious change in the behavior.

MemTest86 made one pass, no errors.

Sometimes it can go most of the day without blackscreening, or sometimes a few minutes after boot, and then - black. Keyboard is still lit, doing it’s color cycle. No change after waiting for a minute. I can hold down power to force reboot, get some error messages about backlight not being restored (and it sits there saying nothing), soft reboot for a second look (not hold down power), and it gets to GDM login, no obvious ill effects.

I have no idea what logs might even be kept through this failure.

I have heard or REISUB previously, now I have it written down.

Note: I have switched to Nouveau for today to see if the issue continues without Nvidia prime drivers. It may take a few hours. to see it again.

(I’ve had QEMU running 5 vms’ windows updates at once on this thing. Hours saved.)

OK, just had the behavior on Nouveau drivers.

REISUB (which I had tested to make sure I set up SysRq correctly earlier) did not trigger a system reboot. However, it only took one hard reset after that to boot up again - no extra soft reboot after the hard reset… so some parts of it might have worked.

Reinstalling the Nvidia prime drivers now to see what difference they make during tomorrow’s work.

Just in case, inxi after the drivers were updated

And… still happening with Nvidia Prime drivers, which is no real surprise. This time during a break when I wasn’t in front of the screen.

Same behavior; REISUB still does not reboot, requiring the hard reset, but the second soft reboot isn’t required after.

I’m now screen lock/blanking just to make sure that’s not related - not that it should be. Incedentally, a manual lock from gnome menus also turns off the keyboard backlight, which I think I already mentioned my issue does not.

Can you do me a favour and try creating a new user and log in there and see if it happens there as well???

Test 1A: CREATE NEW USER, screen always on/no timeout configured, allow sit on gnome terminal with htop. Network not connected. Pass, 14 hours.

Test 1B: no reboot, still with new user. Plug in ethernet, firefox youtube autoplay (no adblock). Fail < 1 hour

Test 2: Log in with New user, ethernet plugged in, chromium youtube autoplay (no adblock). Fail < 1 hour - screen freeze? That is, nothing responds, but the screen is actually on? That I can see of htop doesn’t show anything suspicious (it’s all chromium processes). Still, no visual responce from reisub.

Test 3: confirm reisub still works after clean boot. It does.

Test 4: Log in with New user, ethernet plugged in, do nothing except htop. no-reisub Freeze at uptime: 57:49 The caps lock key indicator is flashing?

Test 5A: Another networkless test. logged out half an hour in? Did not restart, uptime as half an hour. (X session died?)

Test 5B: logging in again, still no network. stable for 9:10.

Test 5C: Plugged in ethernet again. Stable for 1:30 more before safe shutdown.

  • Can you turn off WiFi when you perform the Ethernet test? (sounds like a hardware problem somewhere)…

  • What do the logs say?

    • Note time when problem happens

    • provide output to:

      journalctl --system --boot=0 --since --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS" --until "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS"

where the value for --since is 15 seconds before and --until is 10 seconds after the problem happens.

Normal work, laptop was in airplane mode (no hardware switch), reisub apparently didn’t prevent a reset-then-soft reboot

So. This is presumably useless.

>>> journalctl --system --boot=0 --since "2020-10-26 12:38:00" --until "2020-10-26 12:39:00"                                                                                                                 [1]
-- Logs begin at Wed 2020-10-14 08:35:21 EDT, end at Mon 2020-10-26 12:41:49 EDT. --

If you rebooted, take boot=-1 instead of boot=0.

  • Does it show anything then?

For some reason I thought you were talking about a grub option… Ok, old journalctl entries.

boot=-2, the crashed boot, didn’t have anything for a full 7 minutes before 15:07
Oct 28 15:00:03 rtkit-daemon[1859]: Supervising 12 threads of 6 processes of 2 users

boot=-1, the failed restart, hung at
Oct 28 15:10:41 kernel: ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: PPM init failed (-110)

…which quick research seems to associate with the nvidia driver. So it’s back to Nouveau for now.

I have a 1770 (same chip generation as yours) and the 440 and since yesterday the 450 series seems to be working fine.

  • Print this page so you have it as a reference while in TTY2

  • Log off

  • Switch to TTY2 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2

  • Log in there

  • Execute:

    mhwd --listinstalled

  • Then for all lines of input above:

    sudo mhwd --remove pci OneLinePerDriver
sudo mhwd --install pci video-nvidia-440xx #or 450, definitely not 455
    sudo reboot

Gone now?

I could not get any video-nvidia-440xx to work - even after blocking amdgpu. The screen just sits on a blinking underline when trying to start xorg.

I’m trying the 5.9 kernel with noveau next

…And still crashing.

At this point, I’ve backed up, blown it away, and done a clean install with free drivers.

I was on Ububtu 20.10 for a bit and still got the same crash.

Now I’m back on Manjaro, and downgraded to the memory it shipped with. No crashes yet, but definitely need more time to call it stable.

(later) Still need to do an overnight test, but I’m hopeful. I’m back on the nvidia prime driver.

Note:

sudo /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_backlight=vendor sysrq_always_enabled=1"

sudo update-grub

apparently gets rid of the ‘loading backlight’ error I’ve seen during most boots.

Original memory… passed my stability tests.

Individually testing the SODIMMs of my 64GB upgrade kit still has fatal stability issues. Separately tested, one seems to be associated with the black screen freeze, the other with the blinking caps lock freeze.

I’m spending a bit more time with them to 100% confirm it’s not a motherboard defect before RMA.

Fabby, thank you for your help.

I seem to have my solution, provided by https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/comments/g53yg5/new_asus_tuf_a15_amd_4800h_not_running_advertised/ - a sister model to my Tuf A17 FA706IU

The Crucal bl2k32g32c16s4b 64 GB kit I tried is rated at 1.35 Volts. While a

sudo dmidecode -t 17

confirmed it was being run a 1.20V … some unidentified process as of 5.9.3-1-MANJARO was still causing an occasional undervoltage.

As of installing the HyperX HX432S20IBK2/64 kit, I have had no stability issues, black screens or kernel panics for a 12 hour session.
