Black screen at boot with NVIDIA bumblebee

Hello everyone,

today I simply restarted my computer but unfortunately it only produced a black screen. I am able to login using the terminal (alt+F2). I already tried to reinstall the correct drivers without any success. Previously everything worked fine using the bumblebee 390xx hybrid driver but apparently that is not the case anymore. I also tried starting my system using a live system to check whether my hardware is actually working correctly and everything booted up perfectly.
I tried using startx but received an error. Looking at the Xorg.0.log file also did not produce any helpful insights. Here the content of the log file:

I also tried disabling my NVIDIA card in the BIOS settings so that only my internal card is used but without any success.

Thank your for your help.

Cheers

what kind of desktop are you running?
post output from:
mhwd -l
mhwd -li

Hey thanks for the quick reply. Sorry for the delay as I always need to copy the output to a flash drive first.

I am currently running KDE.

Here the outputs of both commands:

Cheers

you have installed only bumblebee drivers, so install video linux with:
sudo mhwd -i pci video-linux
reboot and check
and also check if it installed with: mhwd -li no need to post output again, just if it shows ‘video-linux’

It installed successfully but the screen stays black at boot. mhwd -li now shows video-linux and bumblebee.

ok, lets try to remove bumblebee and see:
sudo mhwd -r pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-390xx-bumblebee
reboot, if you still get black screen post output from:
journalctl --boot=0 --priority=3 --no-pager

I removed bumblebee but I still get a black screen.

Here the output:

lets try install again the nvidia:
sudo mhwd -f -a pci nonfree 0300
reboot

Nice. Now it boots correctly. Do you have any idea what the problem was?
However now the resolution is completely off and I cannot select 1920x1080 as it is not listed. Any ideas regarding this issue?

have no idea what the problem was… do you have external monitor?

I have one but it is not connected.

I just tested connecting the external screen and for this it automatically selects 1920x1080 as it should. So the driver works with this resolution.

i see youre on notebook … lets try disabling nouveau, go to /etc/default/grub and in this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the ‘’’’ quotes add this parameter: nouveau.modeset=0 - dont delete anything from there, just add it there, then run this command:
sudo update-grub
reboot and check

Unfortunately this did not change anything. But while rebooting I noticed that the resolution of the lock screen is correct and it only changes to the lower setting once I log in. No idea whether that is relevant though. I still only see 960x540, 864x486, and 640x480 for the integrated screen.

and in system settings/display configuration - resolution , is it detected there

Yes there it detects the laptop screen (with wrong resolutions) and the external one. I just remembered that before reaching out here I tried to install the xf86-video-intel package and did not delete it again. Could this have an impact and should I delete it again?

you could try to uninstall it, then reboot and check

Okay now we are back to the initial problem that I get a black screen and can only open the terminal log in. Should I install it again or should I try the modesetting approach as recommended in the Arch wiki?
