Black screen after installation (AMD 6900 XT)

Hi everyone,

just installed Manjaro for the first time. Live environment worked nicely & installation finished without any errors, but now I can’t get the GUI to load (I chose XFCE as desktop environment). When booting into Manjaro, the screen just stays black unless I use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to go into tty-mode.

I’ve already done sudo pacman-mirrors -f3 and sudo pacman -Syyu (there were updates), rebooted, still nothing. (can’t link the thread with this fix because my account is new)

Then I tried startx (step 2 in thread) which flickered the screen and then exited with an error message like “xinit: Connection to server lost”.

In the logs there were two error lines (EE):

(EE) Failed to load module “fbdev” (module does not exist, 0)
and
(EE) Failed to load module “vesa” (module does not exist, 0)

I read somewhere that vesa is some sort of fallback driver module.
Should these modules be installed? If so, how do I do that?
What else can I try to fix this?

inxi output:

I personally don’t know why it is working on the LiveISO, but not on an actual installation.

You can try to use this Stable Review ISO; it has Kernel 5.10, which might help.

You need to download both the .zip and .z01 file and unzip it to get the ISO.

Just tried installing it and almost the same outcome: Live environment works, installation succeeds.
After a reboot there is only a blinking cursor (on the stable manjaro release, the displays went to sleep instead).
Other than that, same story. Ctrl-Alt-F2 works, updating with pacman does install some updates, but still no GUI.
The X Server log looks like this (excerpt):

So the fbdev and vesa modules aren’t necessary, right? I think I’ll try with KDE instead of XFCE, don’t have too much hope though.

Wow, okay. KDE actually worked, so I guess I’m sticking with that for now…

Glad that worked out for you!

I use KDE with my RX 5700 XT myself and it works great.

But I am now curious why the XFCE version has issues post-installation.
