Black grub with no manjaro option and black screen when booting in Manjaro i3 from BIOS

Hi there, after Manjaro last update yesterday I’ve been having some problems.

All started when I tried to run manjaro normally after restarting and after updating. This ended up with a black screen after grub, no login screen, just black. At this time I was using the kernel linux515.

Then I tried to fix this by trying to installing the linux519 kernel, however, this didn’t fix the problem (at this time I have also re-installed the video-nvidia pci non-free drivers and I have uninstalled the kernel linux515).

This didn’t work … I then tried to edit the grub and I removed the “quiet” part. This got things worse. Now the grub is black, and also when booting in manjaro a black screen appears. I tried to restore my grub, but now when installing the grub no Manjaro or windows (I have dual-boot) entries appear on it.

Now I don’t know what to do and I don’t know how to fix this :'), any help is appreciated, thanks… Btw, I use lightdm and i3wm.

Outputs that could be useful to debug this:

From live-usb and then doing manjaro-chroot -a:

I tried to install linux60 kernel with linux60headers and linux60-nvidia drivers but I had no luck unfortunately :frowning:

rerun update again from chroot:
pacman-mirrors --fasttrack 5 && pacman -Syyu
also your grub menu is set to hidden:

so change it:
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
update grub:
update-grub
reboot and see if it helped
if not check if you can boot directly from bios boot options

Thank you for your answer.

I don’t think that this:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden

could be the problem though. I have checked the grub file on another laptop where Manjaro is installed, and the GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE variable is also set to hidden. I will try this anyway.

Blockquote if not check if you can boot directly from bios boot options

I have done that and when I boot on Manjaro I get a black screen, no message, nothing.

if its set to hidden, then grub menu is not being shown during boot …
so if you can boot into windows using bios but not in manjaro, you probably need to reinstall grub … but first provide output from logs, from chroot:
journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager

did you rerun the update? were there no errors?

That’s is weird then - I can swear that my laptop have the hidden option and it shows me the grub. Correct, I can boot into windows using BIOS but not manjaro. When I was in manjaro-chroot I have rerun the update and there were no errors. I checked the packages that were updated (because I have almost the same config and same kernel version on my laptop) and the kernel (linux515) and its driver were updated. I wonder if that’s the reason of the blackscreen when booting into Manjaro. I will send the journal once I’m at home.

518 kernel is end of life… so lets reinstall kernels, drivers and grub:
remove nvidia:
mhwd -r pci video-nvidia
remove the kernels:
pacman -R linux518 linux519 linux60
install the 5.15 & 5.19:
pacman -S linux515 linux519
install nvidia:
mhwd -i pci video-nvidia
reinstall grub:

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=manjaro --recheck

update it:
mkinitcpio -P && update-grub
then change the grub to:
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
update grub:
update-grub
reboot and see if it helped

I got a bitter taste after this. GRUB works, however does not show Windows. When trying to boot either on linux515 or linux519 then I get a black screen and I’m unable to enter TTY. I went back to the live usb and run manjaro-chroot -a, now I’m getting this message:

===> ERROR: No Linux partitions detected!

but the kernels were detected in grub?
post output from:
lsblk -o PATH,PTTYPE,PARTTYPE,FSTYPE,PARTTYPENAME

the windows is not detected bc of reinstalling grub, and would be detected if you would run again sudo update-grub from succesfull boot into manjaro…

and can you boot into windows using bios?

Yes both kernels were detected in grub. However, both show a black screen after selecting them.

I can boot into windows from BIOS.

Let me check if I can login into the forum from palemoon in the manjaro live usb and I will send you the output of the command you mentioned.

when you were installing the kernels/nvidia/grub, was it all successful, no errors?
can you view/browse files in your installation from live usb via the file manager?

everything is detected… which partition is manjaro (root) - sda7 or sdb2?

no errors. All fine.

I have installed thunar, and mounted the drives and then run manjaro-chroot -a and now it works fine.

It’s the sda7 partition

excellent, wanted to chroot manually…
so post output from:

open again the grub file and in this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the quotes add this parameter:

save the file, update grub:
update-grub
reboot and see if that helped
