Bad Performance just in KDE

Hi, I’m trying to switch from Windows to Linux and I choose Manjaro as a new base System. Unfortunately I somehow have graphics performance problems. Not in Games - I don’t play - but just in KDE. Even when I move my mouse, I notice, that it’s not smooth. Like I have a low FPS rate. I even had trouble to click on small buttons. When there are animations, like this jumping little icon, when launching a program, it’s also laggy. And the worst is, when I resize a window or just drag it around.

In Windows I never got such a problem. Also the machine is quite powerful. It’s an Ryzen 9 5950X, with an RTX 3070 (running 4 Displays) and 128GB of RAM.

I (or the installer) installed the proprietary drivers.

Hi and welcome,

Have you tried disabling the Night Light?

Seriously - there was/is a bug that would present for nvidia on kde when the night light was enabled.

( System Settings > Appearance & Style > Colors & Themes > Night Light )

If not that I do also suggest trying to disable various (all) desktop effects.

Night Light is off.
How can I disable the desktop effects? Or all desktop effects as you wrote. Is there a Theme, where everything is disabled? Because currently I have no idea, what or where I can find all the settings to disable everything.

This is mainly what we are talking about for desktop effects:

System Settings > Apps & Windows > Window Management > Desktop Effects
  • None?
System Settings > Workspace > General Behavior
  • Set Animation Speed to maximum (Instant).

These are some extras:

System Settings > Input & Output > Mouse & Touchpad > Screen Edges
  • Set or disable hotcorners by selecting the edge button. Select “No Action” to disable.
System Settings > System > Session > Desktop Session
  • Enable “Start with an empty session”

Btw. this effects should run smooth, with the right settings.

System Settings>Display Monitor>Composition Enabled.

I also recommend to visit:
Taskbar>Settings>Nvidia X Server Settings and adjust your refreshrate (Hz).

LTS Kernel 6.6 is a good option or use the newest 6.11 Kernel.

Are you sure about Composition Enabled? Because I can’t find any setting like this. Under Display Configuration I have no such setting. But there is
Display & Monitor > Compositor

And here it is enabled on startup. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to upload the screenshots, because I’m not allowed to add media to the posting.

The Framerate is about 60 Hz, 59.97 Hz to be precise. On the other screens it’s 60 Hz.

About updating to the newer Kernel 6.11, I can’t find any outstanding update in the Software Manager. Hm…

I also uploaded a Video, so you can see, how bad the lag is:

@cscs I tried to disable the Effects, like you said. It had no effect. Still the same bad performance.

Try to do the following:

  • add nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=1 to the GRUB command line
  • if you have MODULES=() in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, replace it with MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm) then do sudo mkinitcpio -p linux610
  • sudo update-grub
  • reboot and check if it helps

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it out and it seems to be better now. But still far away from a smooth feeling. Unfortunately I can’t post here a link to a video I recorded showing my screen.

Do you have any error messages in journalctl of dmesg?

In dmesg I just have a bt Timeout Error:

[ 26.196946] Bluetooth: hci0: Opcode 0x0c24 failed: -110
[ 26.200274] Bluetooth: hci0: command 0x0c24 tx timeout

[ 28.330383] Bluetooth: hci0: Opcode 0x0c24 failed: -110

In journalctl I have an error:

The option to enable or disable the compositor is not present in Wayland sessions, given that Wayland requires compositing.

...Failed to grab modeset ownership error is most likely due to i2c-nvidia-gpu module. But to be sure provide output of

sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset

And to check video memory consumption - nvidia-smi

Btw you can see desktop FPS by selecting System Settings->Window Management->Desktop Effects->Show FPS

The Output is just a Y

And nvidia-smi gives me this:

2 GB out of 8 GB are used.

I enabled the FPS Feature, that you mentioned, but I can’t see the FPS anywhere.

Everything looks normal.

Multiple monitors might be the source of the problem. But I also remembered a case where laggy cursor movements were caused by a wireless mouse. That’s why it would be useful to look at FPS.

Could you unplug every monitor except your main one, reboot and monitor FPS? There should be a rectangle in the upper right corner with FPS value.

If you use a wireless mouse move the receiver close to the mouse or try to stick it in another USB port.

I think I got the problem. When I rebooted the System, I noticed that I was starting a Plasma Session but with X11. So I changed it to Wayland and now everything is working fine. Everything is snappy as it should be. And also the FPS boxes appeared. Showing about 240 FPS on each screen.

Thanks everybody for your help!

Yeah not in Wayland but he had X11 active, related to the sys info. :face_with_peeking_eye:
