Audio degraded after update

Sound quality while playing video went very bad immediately after stable update. Can hardly hear it with volume turned up and sound quality is scratchy and skips. Cannot tell what is being said. But audio signal is present, just severely degraded.

I updated to latest stable kernel (did not help), experimented with various settings like turning off then back to where sound has always worked, tried sudo pacman -S pipewire-pulse followed by reboot, but nothing helps.

Maybe reinstalling Pipewire using

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pipewire

will help? The script should remove legacy stuff (e.g. PulseAudio) which may be in conflict.

Did it, no joy. Thanks anyway.

Does testing show all audio playback as problematic, or just a particular application? Are you playing audio via your graphics card, or analog output of some type?

When playing audio, observe the output from
pw-top

Hopefully, others can chime in with more specific advice, especially as you say this has only arisen following a kernel update. I guess it could be driver related.

I see no problems exhibited by pw-top during audio play. Zero ERR and normal FORMAT and RATE.

The audio degradation was instantaneous upon reboot after update. Thus it was logical to me that something had gone amiss in the update. Next I am going to experiment with different speakers and headphone, ports, re-routing, etc.

I’m differently baffled after this morning’s testing (using earbuds; no speakers on this machine):

  1. Checked audio, using Imac earbuds per usual, audio still not working listening to CNN via Youtube.
  2. Upping system volume had no effect, but holding down the up-volume rocker on the buds produced normal sound!!
  3. Changed to another (old phone) buds and same thing as (2).
  4. Changed to high quality Sennheiser buds and SOUND WAS NORMAL.
  5. Changed back to Imac earbuds and SOUND WAS NORMAL without having to hold down the volume rocker.
  6. Tried the older earbuds (as per 3 above) and same results as (5).

The audio is normal now, so what changed? Electrical transient boogymen? Sun spots? The only thing I did between last night and this morning was put the computer to sleep for the night. And the audio was still kaput this morning until 15 minutes of fiddling with it and it was okay.

Quantum mechanics at play here?

At any rate everything is working and I guess (?) it is accurate to say problem solved, although I have no idea how or why.

Media control from Bluetooth headsets and similar devices may be forwarded to MPRIS.

Note: Some headphones such as Sony WH-1000XM3 provide an AVRCP interface. For these types mpris-proxy is not required. Just make sure you have key bindings set up for media keys.
