you seem to having both pulse-audio server and pipewire running which might be the cause.

install manjaro-pipewire;

sudo pacman -S manjaro-pipewire

uninstall conflicts as directed and see if it works

Thanks for this but I’m a bit nervous about uninstalling pulse audio. Do you think that’s definitely the cause or is it just something you spotted that was wrong in my inxi output?

If you prefer to continue using PulseAudio, PipeWire service can be disabled with this command

systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.socket pipewire.service

Installing PipeWire packages to replace PulseAudio is not likely to resolve an issue with Audacity
because Audacity only runs in ALSA (or JACK) and requires an ALSA plugin to connect to PulseAudio or PipeWire
Terminal messages for Audacity show failure to connect to an ALSA output for playback

Expression 'stream->playback.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 4628

I suggest using this command to check Audacity Playback configuration

grep -m1 -B1 PlaybackDevice ~/.audacity-data/audacity.cfg

response should look like this if Audacity is configured to use PulseAudio plugin

Host=ALSA
PlaybackDevice=pulse

But If the PlaybackDevice setting is configured to use a hardware device in ALSA, Audacity playback will fail if the hardware device is already connected to PulseAudio

PulseAudio can be stopped or suspended to allow direct connection to hardware
(pacmd suspend 1 to suspend all audio streams; pacmd suspend 0 to de-suspend after using Audacity)
But for most use cases it would be better to use the PulseAudio (or PipeWire) plugin rather than a direct connection in ALSA

Thanks @nikgnomic for the detailed answer. Playback configuration is:

Host=ALSA
PlaybackDevice=sysdefault

Should I change this to PlaybackDevice=pulse? And if so, how?

sysdefault is probably a hardware device
check list of available ALSA outputs

aplay -L

If PulseAudio is configured as default sound server response should show 2 options to use PulseAudio ALSA plugin

pulse
    PulseAudio Sound Server

default
    Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)

Playback Device can be changed in Audacity GUI settings - select either pulse or default from drop-down list

Thanks @nikgnomic, it does look like PulseAudio is the default. I’ve tried changing the playback device to either Pulse or default in the Audacity GUI but that hasn’t fixed the issue I’m afraid

If setting Audacity to use the PulseAudio plugin has no effect on issues relating to scrolling/zooming
it is probably a graphical/display issue rather than an audio issue

If Audacity is not working well for you, you might want to try using ocenaudio-bin from AUR instead
Ocenaudio does not need an ALSA plugin for PulseAudio. Audio files can be loaded/saved faster than Audacity can import/export via ffmpeg. GUI uses QT5 rather than GTK3

OK thanks @nikgnomic . By chance I tried using Audacity while on my laptop today (i.e. not plugged into a monitor) and I wasn’t having the crashing issue, so I guess you’re right it’s likely a graphics issue. Thanks for your help anyway. And thanks for the ocenaudio tip - looks good
