Any thoughts on Fydetab Duo tablet

Fydetab duo tablet supports Linux, Arch support underdevelopment (so potentially Manjaro could be an option). It should be released next year.

12" display, ARM Rockchip RK3588 processor ~£530 earlybird (with delivery)

Is this a good option, or are there better options for open Linux tablets?

I don’t know the tablet, but the SoC is still in the process of being upstreamed.

When more of the hardware gets mainlined, it’s possible that we will look into this tablet too.

Great. The SoC appears to have reasonably strong performance.

Yes we should be able to support it but only after getting the hardware support in upstream kernel.

I’d expect it to happen in near future, maybe a year or 2

ok, It has been a while, but roughly 2 years between order and arrival i finally got my fydetab. it finally arrived a week ago and … yea, its good for me.

Quickly checked the internet for support of the RK3588S chip that’s built in and found this site and yea, it’s supported in mainline kernel nowadays if that information is valid.

There is also the guide to flash the device from the fydetab duo wiki, as well as a list of installable OSes to install. The images there are currently a bit “dusted” (having creation dates from 2 years ago), but I think I’m gonna start tinkering with it, installing arch first. I would of course love to get manjaro started on this device as well, just don’t know what’s involved to make it install. I’ll dig into this a bit in the forum and see if I can make heads or tails of this

You can follow arch guide and get arch working.

For manjaro they will have to use the same kernel pkg and pkg it with manjaro rootfs and provide it for the users to flash it.

:grimacing: I know - I updated that article with some info on how to get network & KDE up and running. There’s currently still some limitation as noted down in the article. mainly the old kernel used when it was released end of 2022 is very limited.

Currently there’s also some testing going on to get a UEFI based bootloader up and running, just to be able to replace the shipped UBoot loader.

Also, I really hope that the underlying hardware will get better kernel upstream support. There is some work going on on that front as well, but I didn’t have any time to investigate how far that has succeeded.

Hey, what is the state nowaday? They released their ‘official’ arch image, is there now also a chance for a manjaro image?

Definitely possible in theory. Arch is their second most supported OS, after Chromium OS based Fyde OS. Not sure how much the ARM version of Manjaro would have to be tweaked for optimal performance.

With every ARM device you need at least one sample device and someone who maintains support for it. It also depends who is currently doing Arch image.

Each OS update might then need retesting.

So if someone wants to put the efforts and time into it, we could see on how we may support it.
