Anh-Linh 26.0.3 (2026-02-28) XFCE full : unable to contact settings server

Hello,
I just downloaded the last Xfce iso , as @philm suggested to try it.
I ran it in a VM that contains a bootable Xfce 25. The iso is properly booted, I then modify grub param to remove splash & quiet params. After that I get an error for the settings server.
Any idea to solve that ?

TL4 edit - removed screenshots of text

tt is known the Xfce ISO occasionally cause issue when run with VirtualBox.

I have tested the ISO on a test system using (no issues)

  • VirtualBox
  • KVM/QEMU (libvirt/virtual machine manager)

To TL4 : how to copy & paste text from a VM that crashes ?

[edit: screenshot removed as I got a better one hereafter]

I don’t know whether one can copy/paste the text output from TTY when it is from a system that is not even installed, when it is a live system like the Manjaro ISO.

With an installed system, you’d probably find all that in the system logs.

When you run it in a VM - and you use VirtManager - there is a GUI which gives you the option to make a screenshot right from the menu of that GUI.
I don’t know about this functionality in VirtualBox or VMware - I don’t use these.

That way you can better capture what is on screen - better quality.
No need to snap a picture with your phone or other camera.

And then you can upload the picture or screenshot to some image sharing site
and share here the link that they give back to you,
so you don’t post the actual picture here

two sites I know about:

bashify.io
and
0x0.st

example screenshot created that way:

https://bashify.io/i/7ArEzn

You also get a deletion code along with it - normally the picture will vanish after some time without any action required.

Describing the issue will suffice.

Screenshots of text is useless and the issue has been discussed before

VirtualBox has the functionality, thanks for the info. :folded_hands:
But I just created some screenshots during a new test and am still searching for them ! I can not find them either in VB folders or my home.

… isn’t there a file picker window where you get to see the path and the name and the option to change the name from what is pre-selected?

You could search / sort your home directory in file manager, setting it to sort for newest first instead of names …

VirtManager creates the screenshots by default in the ~/ (home) directory and the names start with: Screenshot …

Big error, I mixed snapshot and screenshot ! Yes, I can do that :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Translation problem as VB is in french…

No problem to find the snapshots, but no screenshots possible : so smartphone needed as the lines disappear quite quickly..

So no solution to install Xfce on a VM ? I worked with Manjaro 25, but since 26.1 it seems impossible.

… you can just use the “regular” screenshot tool, select the area or the whole screen or the window with or without borders/menus …

Don’t you already have Manjaro installed? Manjaro 25
Or did I misunderstand you?

If so: just update …

The goal was to test the iso, as philm asked for …

Not easy with the “regular” screenshooter , but I got it :

and calamares is now installing xfce26 !!! even with the errors as seen above .

So where is the problem ? What is the solution ? 5 or more tries ?

You did check the isos checksum, did you? Just to be sure it’s not broken.

checksum tested of course. And iso is currently being installed …

[Edit] XFCE 26.3 installed in my VM. reboot ok.

[Edit 2] and now, I can’t reinstall the iso : same error !

Which link did you use to download the ISO ?

I am current trying to test the 26.0.2 ISO on a Lenovo Legion using VirtualBox which is resulting in kernel panic BSOD.

I used the link given by philm in stable update thread.
https://download.manjaro.org/xfce/26.0.3/manjaro-xfce-26.0.3-260228-linux618.iso

So I got an error each time I tried to install it, except once, when I successfully could take a screenshot using the xfce tool in my normal session …
