"amdgpu: The CS has been rejected" crash on gstreamer

Hi,

I recently swapped out my videocard for a Radeon HD7800 series. Since then I’m experiencing a specific crash while playing Hollow Knight Silksong (with wine). The game runs fine, except cutscenes cause a hard crash. Completing the Flexile Spines quest for example.

How can i debug this further?

I did try dmesg, but that only shows my gamepad connecting/disconnecting.

Please switch to a supported kernel e.g. Linux 7.2 (recommended when using AMD hardware)

That’s a few thousand lines of noise that doesn’t help your case.
But first things first :
As @linux-aarhus pointed out, update the kernel as the earlier versions of 7 series had some glitches with AMD hardware

As for dmesg you should use a combination of dmesg and grep to filter the noise and display only relevant facts.

I did. Just to clarify, the only thing that changed on the system was the GPU.
Previous GPU was a GTX970 with Nvidia 580xx drivers, this worked without problems.

A list of changes / timeline:

  • removed Nvidia GPU
  • installed Radeon GPU
  • installed xf86-video-amdgpu package
  • set kernel command line options: radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.dpm=1 amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff
  • removed Nvidia drivers

Got an immediate crash with Silksong, after some digging found that dxvk was not set up.
installed dxvk with winetricks. Game running except cut scenes (where we are now),

EDIT: I tried linux72 just now as requested, but still gives me the same crash.

Note that the z in inxi -zv8 filters personally identifiable information from the command output.

When z is used, any further redaction is superfluous and only succeeds in limiting the scope of information that might assist in successfully diagnosing your issue.

Considering the state of the world today i don’t see how being cautious is a bad thing. If there’s something really important missing just name that so i can reconsider.

This is for reference: The general expectation is that when output from a command is requested, especially by forum staff, it should be provided; especially given that your caution has already been addressed by filtering the output.

As you may imagine, having to request portions of the inxi output which you could have already provided is less than optimal.

You shouldn’t need all of the radeon & amdgpu parameters if you install linux71, linux72 or linux73 (RC) as, from linux619, the kernel defaults to using the amdgpu driver for AMD GCN 1.0 “Southern Islands” or GCN 1.1 “Sea Islands” graphics cards:

Regarding the elevator=noop boot parameter, remove that from your boot parameters and see if running the kernel’s default scheduler fixes the issue. Possibly the noop scheduler is causing the issue. We should at least rule it out by booting with the default kernel scheduler.

So, install linux71 or linux72 (or linux73 if you want to test the next kernel), remove the noop, radeon & amdgpu boot parameters from /etc/default/grub, run sudo update-grub, and then reboot to see if the problem still occurs.

Moving from wine to wine-staging fixed the issue.
