All the sound is going through my microphone

Hi,

I just bought a new headset (Corsair HS50 Pro), everything was fine until I tried to speak with my friends on discord, I found that they could hear all the things that I was doing on my computer (my music, game sound etc…).

I tried some things with pavucontrol and alsamixer but it still doesn’t work.

I’m using the headset with an usb adapter. Everything worked fine before with an other headset (Logitech G430), with the usb adapter too.

Is there a way to stop this from happening ?

EDIT : this may be useful :

Please post the output of pa-info.

Just out of curiosity:
Does your music, game sound, etc all output on your speakers or headset?
Because if your normal output of those are played on your speakers it is no wonder that your microphone picks-up that sound from the background…

Yep sorry, forgot that (it’s very long) :

!!ALSA/HDA dmesg
!!--------------

It seems like the speakers of my laptop are not even recognized by Manjaro, the output is only on my headset lol

And I forgot to say in my original post that even the sound of my mic is VERY low, even when I put the mic and capture at 100 in alsamixer

Maybe sof-firmware is not installed? By the way, kernel 5.8 is end-of-life, please upgrade soon.

I don’t see any obvious signs of PulseAudio misconfiguration that would cause this. Can you rule out the possibility of hardware issues?

I just saw that sof-firmware wasn’t installed, I just installed it and rebooted my computer but it didn’t change anything :slightly_frowning_face:
I’m upgrading my kernel right now, thanks lol

I don’t see any obvious signs of PulseAudio misconfiguration that would cause this. Can you rule out the possibility of hardware issues?

The only issue that I have on my computer except that is that I can’t access my bios anymore and I don’t know why, I just get a blank screen when I press on the keybutton to access it but I don’t think that it’s related.

I forgot to mention that in my settings the mic is going through “WEBRTC Voice Engine”, I think that this is the thing that is transmitting all the sounds on my computer, and on pavucontrol “recStream de” is written next to it, but I don’t have any other option.

EDIT : nevermind I tried with my old headset the mic works fine and there is still the “WEBRTC voice engine”, but the headset is broken so I can’t use it, the problem is really only with my new headset…

“WebRTC Voice Engine” is Discord based on the output of pa-info. Can you test if this issue exists when not using Discord?

Mute your microphone in pavucontrol (“input devices” tab), then start parec > ~/test.rec, then play some music, then stop parec with Ctrl+C, then play it back using pacat ~/test.rec. Do you hear the desktop audio?

When I mute my mic on pavucontrol I don’t hear anything when I play music on youtube, but when I reactivate it I hear my voice + the sound from youtube :slightly_frowning_face:

Does the headset have hardware volume control? If so, set to zero, and try the test again.

I have the same results, when I cut my mic directly on the headset I don’t hear anything, and only turning the sound to 0 doesn’t change anything I still hear it all.

Sorry, I probably wasn’t clear:

  1. set the (speaker) volume to zero directly on the headset
  2. leave the system volume unchanged (it should not be muted)
  3. start parec
  4. play music and talk for a bit, then stop
  5. stop parec
  6. unmute the headset
  7. check the results with pacat

Is this what you’ve done?

No problem, my english isn’t very good.

Yes, when I do this I hear all the things that I said + the music that I plaied on my computer when my headset volume was set to 0.
