Akonadi fails to start following Stable Update 2025-08-30

The last stable update broke akonadi here. Furthermore ist shows very interesting behavior - it seems the code which determines if akonadi is running is duplicated and inconsistent:

$ akonadictl stop
Akonadi is not running.
$ akonadictl start
Akonadi is already running.
$ akonadictl stop
Akonadi is not running.
 $ akonadictl restart
Akonadi is not running.

I’ve moved your post to its own Topic. This way you are more likely to get dedicated assistance; also, I guess that Update thread will be closed shortly as we are about due for another update (which, itself, may fix the issue).

Cheers! :smiley_cat:

There are more commands like akonadictl status and akonadictl instances where the latter indicates that having multiple instances running is a feature not an inconsistency.

This is completely weird. Please provide more system information like inxi -zv8

What about Kontact or KOrganiser or KMail?

More akonadi output:

KMail also does not work (that is how I detected the issue originally). KMail detects that akonadi (Personal Information Service) is not running and tries to start it, but fails with “A required background service is not running”

This seems to be the problem. I can’t tell what it is caused by. There was a similar report for Arch recently. Notice that the mentioned packages akonadi-notes and knotes aren’t part of the Arch distro - so if you should have installed them then probably from the AUR.

If these packages aren’t the culprit I would try akonadictl fsck to check for a data corruption issue. But check whether you have these packages installed first and if so whether removing them solves the issue.

Many thanks for the quick reply. Indeed there were old versions of knotes (24.08!) and akonadi-notes on my system.

After that I run akonadictrl fsck and restarted the KDE session, which resolved the issue.

Could it be that these packages have been in Manjaro before but got removed recently? I found more outdated package, which I now also remove.

Thanks again :slight_smile:

Manjaro mirrors Arch. So yes these packages probably were in Arch and got removed when they were outdated. Now if the AUR is enabled and you installed these packages (originally from the Arch or rather Manjaro repository) they won’t be removed but taken from the AUR which still contains everything. I think they would be removed in the case the AUR isn’t enabled. I mean I use the AUR and I noticed the behavior (I think it would be the same on Arch) and have to clean up packages i didn’t install myself from the AUR regularly.
