You don’t have to post 10 posts in succession. You can edit the first one and put everything there. Also learn how to use preformatted text, because your text is unreadable. I mean, just look at your own posts.

Please heed @zbe’s advice regarding posting.

That’s unhelpful to say the least - you need to check the diff of the pacnew file to the currently active config:

$ diff -u /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.pacnew

Thanks for the help with posting format. The diffs were between a working install and the broken install. Thanks for the advice about comparing lightdm.conf and lightdm.conf.pacnew. In the meantime I had reinstalled xfce4.

I ended up using

sudo pacman -S xfce4 --overwrite "*"

Which got the session working again.

However it wiped out the Manjaro start icon on the panel and terminal is not working.

The machine is a mess, since it will not allow me to change kernel, and does not show up new kernel installs.

I can ssh into it so I should be able to get the files off to a different machine.

Any ideas on how to clean up the xfce4 install so that things like terminal work would be appreciated.

I can still ssh into the machine, and CTL + ALT + F2 works to get a local tty

This is not a fix for everything.
But if you want to reinstall all the standard packages you can use mapare;

bash <(curl -s https://gitlab.com/cscs/mapare/-/raw/main/mapare) -IA

And type xfce at the prompt.

When it comes to handling pacnews … here is my suggestion:

Continuing the discussion from Why is the community repo missing?:

Thanks tried it got response

Please provide desktop environment (kde,xfce,gnome): xfce
:: Synchronising package databases...
 core is up to date
 extra is up to date
 community is up to date
 multilib is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...
 there is nothing to do

Key problem I have is getting xfce4-terminal working again.

It has an Input-Output Error.
And I need it working for user who has a meeting tomorrow morning.

You definitely still have pacnews to handle, as the [community] repo has been deprecated for a long while.

There may or may not be something related in them - /etc/shells, pam things, etc.

(and I am not sure if the continued existence of [community] may hinder upgrades)

Is there any way we can get the errors being produced?
And/or can you install/launch any other terminal?

And what about the kernels?

uname -a
mhwd-kernel -li
inxi -Fazy

(if you are stuck on an old unsupported kernel that could be causing problems as well)

uname -a

Yeah that would be a problem.
5.14 is not a supported kernel.
And rather old.

If you can … it would be good to at least get some working supported kernel.

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux515

Or if that does not work

sudo pacman -Syu linux515

While we are here … might as well add the latest tool to keep grub bootloader updated

sudo pacman -Syu install-grub && sudo install-grub

But lets be extra sure

sudo mkinitcpio -P && sudo update-grub

Reboot.
During boot up you should be able to select a kernel from grub … please attempt to boot into 5.15.
(if grub is hidden try hitting Shift)

If we can get into 5.15 then we want to start purging 5.14

sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux514

Or if mhwd-kernel does not work

sudo pacman -Rns $(pacman -Qsq linux514)

(and if you say 6.1 is broken then do the same with it)

PS

BIOS is out of date. From my search
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/126140/intel-nuc-kit-nuc8i7beh/downloads.html

Thanks,
Downloading an updated BIOS, and trying to get back the boot options.
It looks like the grub config has updated, but it hung on.

sudo mkinitcpio -P && sudo update-grub

Stuck at this point. However the 6.6 kernel was found, and hopefully will be on the grub menu when I reboot. Going to give it a while to see if it continues… with building the kernel image.
I am creating a new install USB, so I can install on a different machine, whilst trying to get this one back.

Ouch, but it is the flaky old 5.14
The -P flag tries to build all images.
Instead you can use -p and name the others;

sudo mkinitcpio -p linux515

(etc for any other installed kernels?)
After building the images you want to run update-grub

sudo update-grub

PS.
If you wish for a menu at every start be sure to check /etc/default/grub for options

  • GRUB_TIMEOUT = number greater than 0
  • GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE = menu

(changes to the file must be followed by update-grub as above)

It is now on 6.6 with a back up of 6.1.

However the terminal problem is still the same on 6.6.

The install-grub managed to pick up 6.6 so I managed to move up kernel, before mkinitcpio failed.

Ah well thats something.

So are you only able to execute commands in TTY? Or what are you using?

Oh if its the same as above you are sshing in?

A sort of workaround for the moment may be to try to install another terminal;

sudo pacman -Syu mate-terminal

Great idea. Tried it and had following errors

lots of empty file warnings

ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libzita-resampler.so.1.11.2 is empty, not checked.
ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libhandle.so.1.0.3 is empty, not checked.

PS Now running on latest BIOS.

running in ssh session

$ mate-terminal
mate-terminal: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libvte-2.91.so.0: file too short

So tried same for xfce4-terminal

$ xfce4-terminal
xfce4-terminal: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libgtk-layer-shell.so.0: file too short

Should give a Gtk-WARNing cannot open display from an ssh session.

Yeah that all looks like problems.

Ok … lets manually do what one of the pacnews would have done and remove [community] from /etc/pacman.conf

You can optionally comment it out using #, ex:

#[community]
#SigLevel = PackageRequired
#Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Once that is done please perform (removing package cache optional, but yes to unused repos)

sudo pacman -Sc

Then sync/update again

sudo pacman -Syu

(this should look normal, with the [community] part gone)

But probably not fix the issue.

Those file errors come from various packages including xfsprogs,xapp, gtk-layer-shell

So…

Lets reuse mapare.

After reviewing your previous output … I am not sure it is being run in the correct system, or there is some other problem trying to load it through ssh, as the command should have resulted in reinstalls of all existing packages (plus installs of anything missing).

Example on my kde system
$ ./mapare -IA

 Manjaro Package Restore

 Retrieve and reinstall package lists

 Please provide desktop environment (kde,xfce,gnome): kde

So heres the remote string again

bash <(curl -s https://gitlab.com/cscs/mapare/-/raw/main/mapare) -IA

But we might want to download it and run it, ex:

curl -O https://gitlab.com/cscs/mapare/-/raw/main/mapare
chmod +x mapare
./mapare -IA

(again input your DE xfce)

I would hope for the reinstalls to work … but with all of the file problems you have you might want to go nuclear.

./mapare -IA --overwrite

The mapare --overwrite flag should pass the --overwrite '*' to pacman.
Normally we would avoid this … but it appears you have many random packages with various fragmentations.

PS. I totally neglected to incorporate mirrors into our checks.
With the system being out of date for some time it only stands to reason the mirror could be old/bad as well.

Heres a sort and sync

sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syu

If for whatever reason its stuck on a stale custom mirror pool you can reset it with

sudo pacman-mirrors -c all && sudo pacman -Syu

(mirror status page link: https://repo.manjaro.org/)

Thanks,
Got the following error

./mapare -IA --overwrite

 Manjaro Package Restore

 Retrieve and reinstall package lists

 Please provide desktop environment (kde,xfce,gnome): xfce
./mapare: illegal option -- -
 Options:

  -h to show this help

  -I to install missing packages (--needed by default)

 Install options (require -I):

  -A to install the entire package list
  -D to limit package list to desktop profile
  -E to mark packages as explicitly installed
  -P to only print the package list
  -R to reinstall system packages

  Use the additional --overwrite flag to overwrite existing files.
  (Use With Caution)

Going to have a look at the script to see if I can find the problem.

Updated script to create a version with overwrite as default, but it did not do anything.

:: Starting full system upgrade...
 there is nothing to do

Could not get it to work so went for a full reinstall of everything with overwrite.
sudo pacman -Syu $(pacman -Qnq) --overwrite '*'

Unfortunately machine crashed at point
(11/43) Updating module dependencies…

And no longer boots due to an image authorisation security Violation

Sad days.
I was just coming back to say I found and wrangled the bug. :crying_cat_face:
(simply was the first getopts loop interpreting the long option, which it does not support)
Its fixed and updated for the future though. So thats something.

I am not sure what your exact error there is.
I suppose we hope it can be accessible via a “Fallback” boot option or … at the very least a Live ISO and a chroot (or manjaro-chroot).

Heres some basics:

Thanks,
Two problems updating the bios turned on secure boot. Went in and turned it off.

Other problem was the crash whilst updating all the packages. Just trying to unlock pacman and try again from a local tty rather than doing it remotely.

Crash has taken out NetworkManager, so going to reinstall after I get another PC working.

Joy of Joys the replacement PC does not support the monitor resolution.
