I can ssh in and can access via terminal

Had a look in /var/log/lightdm

Looking at my working install the log is as follows

I copied over the working config and then diffed the config for lightdm only difference was logind-check-graphical.

That’s unhelpful to say the least - you need to check the diff of the pacnew file to the currently active config:

Thanks for the help with posting format. The diffs were between a working install and the broken install. Thanks for the advice about comparing lightdm.conf and lightdm.conf.pacnew. In the meantime I had reinstalled xfce4.

I ended up using

sudo pacman -S xfce4 --overwrite "*"

Which got the session working again.

However it wiped out the Manjaro start icon on the panel and terminal is not working.

The machine is a mess, since it will not allow me to change kernel, and does not show up new kernel installs.

I can ssh into it so I should be able to get the files off to a different machine.

Any ideas on how to clean up the xfce4 install so that things like terminal work would be appreciated.

I can still ssh into the machine, and CTL + ALT + F2 works to get a local tty

This is not a fix for everything.
But if you want to reinstall all the standard packages you can use mapare;

pacdiff -s

Use ‘v’ to view, compare, edit, and merge new code.

(note the same file will be presented again after merge/save/close … if satisfied with the marge you can then ‘r’ for remove. Or just ‘s’ to skip … retaining the file for next pacdiff check, such as after a reboot)

The focus is to preserve configurations while adding in the new standards.

Yeah that would be a problem.
5.14 is not a supported kernel.
And rather old.

If you can … it would be good to at least get some working supported kernel.

While we are here … might as well add the latest tool to keep grub bootloader updated

But lets be extra sure

Reboot.
During boot up you should be able to select a kernel from grub … please attempt to boot into 5.15.
(if grub is hidden try hitting Shift)

If we can get into 5.15 then we want to start purging 5.14

Or if mhwd-kernel does not work

sudo pacman -Rns $(pacman -Qsq linux514)

Ouch, but it is the flaky old 5.14
The -P flag tries to build all images.
Instead you can use -p and name the others;

sudo mkinitcpio -p linux515

(etc for any other installed kernels?)
After building the images you want to run update-grub

sudo update-grub

If you wish for a menu at every start be sure to check /etc/default/grub for options

• GRUB_TIMEOUT = number greater than 0
• GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE = menu

(changes to the file must be followed by update-grub as above)

It is now on 6.6 with a back up of 6.1.

However the terminal problem is still the same on 6.6.

The install-grub managed to pick up 6.6 so I managed to move up kernel, before mkinitcpio failed.

Yeah that all looks like problems.

Ok … lets manually do what one of the pacnews would have done and remove [community] from /etc/pacman.conf

You can optionally comment it out using #, ex:

Once that is done please perform (removing package cache optional, but yes to unused repos)

sudo pacman -Sc

Then sync/update again

sudo pacman -Syu

(this should look normal, with the [community] part gone)

Those file errors come from various packages including xfsprogs,xapp, gtk-layer-shell …

So…

Lets reuse mapare.

After reviewing your previous output … I am not sure it is being run in the correct system, or there is some other problem trying to load it through ssh, as the command should have resulted in reinstalls of all existing packages (plus installs of anything missing).

I would hope for the reinstalls to work … but with all of the file problems you have you might want to go nuclear.

./mapare -IA --overwrite

The mapare --overwrite flag should pass the --overwrite '*' to pacman.
Normally we would avoid this … but it appears you have many random packages with various fragmentations.

PS. I totally neglected to incorporate mirrors into our checks.
With the system being out of date for some time it only stands to reason the mirror could be old/bad as well.

Heres a sort and sync

sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syu

If for whatever reason its stuck on a stale custom mirror pool you can reset it with

sudo pacman-mirrors -c all && sudo pacman -Syu

Updated script to create a version with overwrite as default, but it did not do anything.

I was just coming back to say I found and wrangled the bug.
(simply was the first getopts loop interpreting the long option, which it does not support)
Its fixed and updated for the future though. So thats something.

I am not sure what your exact error there is.
I suppose we hope it can be accessible via a “Fallback” boot option or .. at the very least a Live ISO and a chroot (or manjaro-chroot).

Two problems updating the bios turned on secure boot. Went in and turned it off.

Other problem was the crash whilst updating all the packages. Just trying to unlock pacman and try again from a local tty rather than doing it remotely.

Crash has taken out NetworkManager, so going to reinstall after I get another PC working.

Joy of Joys the replacement PC does not support the monitor resolution.
