After updating, I got a black screen. Now I have uninstalled linux 6.12.1-4 (before it worked with 6.12.1-2). After reinstalling linux, it gave the same error, so I uninstalled it and I’m with 6.6.63-1.
@bardo which graphical driver do you use? What does modprobe nvidia say?
Display contoller - GP 107 GeForce GTX 1050 TI. Modepro didn’t report anything.
I had an update on the 24th: upgraded mhwd-nvidia-470xx (470.256.02-6 → 470.256.02-7)
Blockquote modprobe [-V]
modprobe: FATAL: Module [-V] not found in directory /lib/modules/6.6.63-1-MANJARO.
From the information I think I don’t have modprobe installed, although I find modprobe.d in the Lib folder.
That cannot be true: modprobe
comes with kmod
package which is required by any kernel package.
@bardo check ypur /var/log/pacman.log for packages which got updated.
Why you reinstalling Linux? You can install other Kernels from Live Boot if you chroot from there.
You could also save a lot of time, if you rollback your system with Timeshift. You just have to create a snapshot before you doing system updates.
Your System information would help also:
inxi --admin --verbosity=5 --filter --no-host --width
Here is an output of my PC without restarting it yet:
$ modprobe nvidia
modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found in directory /lib/modules/6.12.0-1-MANJARO
$ pacman -Q linux612
linux612 6.12.0-2
$ lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia_uvm 6692864 0
nvidia_drm 122880 0
nvidia_modeset 1605632 1 nvidia_drm
nvidia 60596224 2 nvidia_uvm,nvidia_modeset
drm_ttm_helper 16384 2 nvidia_drm,xe
video 81920 4 asus_wmi,xe,i915,nvidia_modeset
This simply means I’ve updated the running kernel linux612 from revision 1 to revision 2 without rebooting my system.
After a reboot the output is like this:
$ modprobe nvidia
$ lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia_uvm 6692864 0
nvidia_drm 122880 0
nvidia_modeset 1605632 1 nvidia_drm
nvidia 60596224 2 nvidia_uvm,nvidia_modeset
drm_ttm_helper 16384 2 nvidia_drm,xe
video 81920 4 asus_wmi,xe,i915,nvidia_modeset
$ pacman -Q nvidia-dkms
nvidia-dkms 550.120-1
Also you can see that all extramodules got updated: [manjaro-packages] [BoxIt] Memo (x64)

Post your Terminal output as Code with the </> Icon.
Probably the Plymouth bug:
Open /etc/default/grub and remove the word splash & quiet from the Grub command line.
Then save the File and use this command:
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
In addition you can also remove plymouth hook from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
Then save the File and use this command:
sudo mkinitcpio -P
It could help to identify where it stuck, when you have a boot problem in future. So you see a checklist, the same when booting live environment.
Good afternoon
Today I decided to reinstall linux611 and after rebooting the pc it worked without a black screen. Then I decided to install linux 612 and I was amazed because it already works.
Thank you all for your help in trying to solve the problem I had.
Hugs to all and thank you.
OK, so the issue is fixed. You can list your linux packages like this:
pacman -Q | grep linux
An example output would be:
pacman -Q | grep linux
archlinux-appstream-data 20240914-1
archlinux-keyring 20241015-1
linux-api-headers 6.10-1
linux-firmware 20241111.b5885ec5-1
linux-firmware-whence 20241111.b5885ec5-1
linux-headers-meta 6.11-1
linux-meta 6.11-1
linux515 5.15.173-1
linux515-headers 5.15.173-1
linux61 6.1.119-1
linux61-headers 6.1.119-1
linux611 6.11.10-2
linux611-headers 6.11.10-2
linux612 6.12.1-4
linux612-headers 6.12.1-4
linux66 6.6.63-1
linux66-headers 6.6.63-1
util-linux 2.40.2-1
util-linux-libs 2.40.2-1
If you have packages like linux612-nvidia
it would indicate that you have the nvidia binary extramodules installed. If you have instead some like this:
pacman -Q | grep dkms
dkms 3.1.1-2
nvidia-dkms 550.135-1
virtualbox-host-dkms 7.1.4-2
… then you might use dkms for out of tree modules.
