After update, unable to use 2 screen devices to extend screens

After I updated my Manjaro linux yesterday, I am unable to use 2 screens. After plugging in the HDMI, the screen automatically goes to the connected monitor and my laptop screen goes black. Plugging off the hdmi brings the screen back to laptop.
Display settings do not provide any option to use 2 screens at the same time.

Also, the Manjaro icon of my home has changed to KDE default icon, maybe somethign went wrong with the update. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Forum!

I guess only one monitor is showing in the drop-down Device: list?

Also, to help people to help you, we will need you to post some system info e.g. inxi -zv8 (highlight the pasted text and use the </> buton to put it into a code-formatted box; it makes it easier to read).

Was this the major Plasma6 upgrade by any chance?

Also, I believe it is the major update cause I had not logged into linux (I use it to learn linux) for about 2.5 months

It’s probably a long shot, but since you’re not using Nvidia, have you tried a Wayland session to see if it’s still the same there?

I am not aware of what Wayland is. Here is the full response to the command you provided to run

Wayland is selectable (usually) in the bottom-left corner of the login screen. Just thought it would be worth a try.

It is possible that the second monitor is not activated or that they are overlapping.

Try this:

kscreen-doctor output.eDP-1.enable
kscreen-doctor output.HDMI-A-1.enable
kscreen-doctor output.HDMI-A-1.position.0,0 output.eDP-1.position.1920,0

Change the order of the monitors:

kscreen-doctor output.eDP-1.position.0,0 output.HDMI-A-1.position.1920,0

the system was not recognizing the second screen, was not able to change the order

this worked, but should I always start with wayland session now?

If it is working, yes, I’d recommend that. It’s pretty stable and reliable in my experience.

When Plasma 6.1 arrives, the issue with saved sessions should be fixed but I think most other stuff has been already, now.

If you’ve selected Wayland, it will boot that way until you manually select X11 in the login screen.
