After Update - Several problems in Wayland mode

Yesterday I did a full system update. And when I tried to use my laptop this morning I had following problems:

  • After entering password in GDM, freeze of mouse and keyboard, switching to TTY not possible, power button was recognized for clean shutdown
  • After reboot in GDM, switching to TTY, login and executing “startx”, UI came up
  • But several problems with apps: Slow start (e.g. Chromium), apps forgetting login data (e.g. Netxcloud client)
  • Using of media keys (like pause) freezes session again
  • Test with separate user account, same problem

I was able to solve the problems by forcing GDM into X11 mode in file

/etc/gdm/custom.conf

by activating the line

WaylandEnable=false

Since then the system behaves normal. Here my INXI output:

Heya,

Not sure what could be the problem, there is no swap configured tho, but since x11 works this does not seem to be a lead.

When switching back to wayland does the journal report anything that might indicate something breaking?

An option to try, newer lts kernel, 6.12

…is incomplete.

Please provide full system information as described (below).

I am not sure if I want to switch the kernel version because the system is a productive one, so I am not into experiments here.

Regards

There is no real risk involved. It is generally recommended to have at least one other Kernel installed in case of issues with the one you are currently using.

Your machine is much more recent than mine and I’m currently running linux613 without any apparent issues. You can always switch to another Kernel via the GRUB menu if you have any problems.

Manjaro allows multiple kernels to be installed. You have kernel 6.6 (LTS) installed and likely 6.1 (LTS) as well (guessing).

If you were to replace kernel 6.1 (LTS) with kernel 6.12 (LTS), or install 6.12 (LTS) as an additional kernel, that still leaves 6.6 (LTS) in situ.

This means you can alternately choose to boot with either kernel. Rather than random experimentation this seeks a possible solution without jeopardising your existing kernel.

Aside:- I note also that your system BIOS is out of date (2019). It might be beneficial to look for the latest non-beta BIOS on the manufacturer site. An updated BIOS can often solve known issues and mitigate against known security threats.

Regards.

Hi,

I upgraded to a newer LTS Kernel

johann@TwiBook ~]$ inxi
CPU: quad core Intel Core i5-10210U (-MT MCP-) speed/min/max: 400/400/4200 MHz
Kernel: 6.12.19-1-MANJARO x86_64 Up: 1m Mem: 2.07/15.32 GiB (13.5%)
Storage: 698.65 GiB (37.5% used) Procs: 298 Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.37

but the problems remain with Wayland.

I will check a possible BIOS update.

Regards
