After update, most programs don't launch

I haven’t been so attentive to the updates recently.

After the last one, only a few things work.
The systems boots normally, but many programs and even some settings are not opening anymore.
I tried re-installing some programs or changing them, but nothing works.
I thought of re-installing the whole thing, but I cannot even burn the iso file on a usb drive.
Does anyone have ideas?

We’ll need a little more information about the issue than that to be able to help. See:

Tip: When pasting terminal output on Discourse forums, one can either…

  • Highlight it and use the Preformatted text </> toolbar button.

  • Add three backticks ` above and below the text (Markdown):

    ```
    ```

  • Use HTML:

Done. What other useful information can I provide?

Are there any errors when you run said programs from the terminal? The tutorial I linked has more information about looking at logs as well.

I tried to run two executable in usr/bin and these are the errors:

(base) [name@name bin]$ telegram-desktop

I tried to get more info using vlc as a model.

Part of both errors is ‘segmentation fault’, which means it is trying memory which it isn’t allowed to.

Could be a problem with the programs or libraries they use.

How did you try to ‘burn’ iso to usb? the simplest method is to use the command dd.

I tried to use imagewriter, but that was for reinstalling the whole system.

You can create a boot iso just using the terminal and command dd

Use with care though (and have backups of important data), as it will wipe the location it is writing to.

Try making a bootable usb (as you initially thought to do) and see if you run into the same errors when running the OS on usb.

Had the same thing happen on top of a sound issue that didn’t resolve. The update included pulseaudio-bluetooth and I don’t have bluetooth. I did a complete reinstall to see if that would repair anything I might have loused up trying to fix the sound. The programs now work but still no sound. I tried to remove bluetooth programs but found pulseaudio depends on bluetooth pulse audio so I’m stuck. I haven’t tried Arch, Ubuntu or Mint yet…but I’m guessing national security and surveillance updates are now as loused up as the Afghanistan pullout…

The real problem could be that you defied twitter and installed telegram
