After stable update 2025-12-08 the game "7 days to die" stutters and lags

Hi all

I played “7 days to die” on ge-proton (latest version) and it worked fine, after the stable update on 2025-12-08 the game stutters, lags and all other processes are affected (steam GUI, browser, discord, etc.), which also lag.

It appears that other games are not (yet) affected - haven’t tried all of them yet, though.

Anyone know where I can start investigating? I am kinda at a loss here.

Cheers for your help

Please provide complete inxi output as described (below).

Regards.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)
inxi man pages (manual)
If running `inxi` within a `chroot` environment
  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Thank you, much appreciated - the inxi info is added

I note you have no swap space configured – this might be contributing. Beyond that, I have little else to suggest at this time.

Thank you very much for you reply.
I will certainly investigate - since I haven’t had swap space before the update (and the game did work before), I am not entirely sure how this could be connected.

In any case - thank you again, much appreciated.

It does appear so far, that this particular game is the only one affected. Which is odd in itself.

What I would do if I were you is:

  • Try switching to Valve’s official Proton Experimental or Proton Hotfix.
  • Check game launch params, and remove anything unnecesarry, or better yet, clean up the whole box.
  • Also could be a corrupted proton (wine) prefix, that I’d clean up by:
    rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/251570
(This is safe, because it only cleans up Proton’s prefix, which holds nothing valuable but just a windows sandbox environment, and will quickly regenerate itself, on the next game launch.)

If those didn’t help, you can also try logging of what’s causing the problem. Add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game’s launch paramter, then attempt launching the game, when play button appears again in steam, logging is done, the log file will be written into your home directory, with name of steam-$GAMEID.log, which in your case is steam-251570.log. Share that file with us.
