After SDDM login: Black screen, only mouse

Hi everyone,

after logging in with SDDM greeter, the loading animation takes longer than usual, then drops me into a black screen with a responsive mouse. This started after rebooting after a after a full system update a few days ago. I couldn’t yet find ou the cause, or how to fix it properly, so I’m asking for your help/ideas. I would like to understand the root cause, using this as an opportunity to learn. Please help me understand what’s going on. My system is up to date (stable branch).

  • I can log in as root via SDDM and successfully start the desktop, which suggests some kind of misconfiguration for my user account.
  • However, various troubleshooting tips I found online for such cases, like rm -rf ~/.cache and temporarily removing Plasma-related files in ~/.config/ did not help.
  • When I switch to another terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F3 and run startx there with my usual account, it surprisingly does work.

First off:

$ inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host

I will post the journalctl logs in a reply as it would exceed the post character limit.

There are a couple of issues in the journalctl logs. I looked into a few, but they appear to be benign. A few things I want to note about the log:

  • At about 21:26:02 is when I attempt to login (I mistype the password once)
  • At 21:19:43 a program (remmina) fails to access kwallet: Couldn't start kwalletd: QDBusError("org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown", "The name is not activatable"). This might be related, since I noticed I have issues with signal-desktop accessing kwallet. That’s another issue, but it appeared at the same time.
  • At 21:26:18 Stopping User Manager for UID 959... seems like the point where starting the desktop is aborted. User 959 is SDDM, so the session of SDDM is being terminated. But I’m not sure what causes this.
  • All this might be related to the switch to KDE 6.

Running $ sudo journalctl -b 0 gives me:

May be this is the Mesa issue described in the latest update thread:

Look for “Graphical issues on older hardware (Black screen, Flickering) due to mesa 25.2.x update” in the thread and press the small triangle at the left.

This is the workaround:

It seems on older hardware the mesa 25.2.x update created some regressions which may result in black screens or flickering. Some older Nvidia cards with nouveau driver seem to be affected.

You can try to use the 25.1.x series of Mesa via this repo. Simply place it on top of [extra] in your /etc/pacman.conf file and use sudo pacman -Syuu to downgrade.

[mesa-251]
SigLevel = PackageRequired
Server = https://download.manjaro.org/pkgs/mesa

If you have no graphical session available you can access the bootloader by pressing ESC key during boot and select the bootloader entry. Press CTRL+E for edit and search for the words quiet and splash. Delete those and add 3 to the line. Then execute CTRL+x to start your session. You will land in a text console TTY. Login with your user.

Edit the /etc/pacman.conf with nano: sudo nano /etc/pacman.conf. Perform the downgrade and reboot.

First i wondered about the last sentence because version 6 is out for one and a half year or so. Then i saw in the journalctl logs

Sep 17 21:26:08 my-host sddm-helper[1638]: pam_kwallet5(sddm:auth): pam_kwallet5: pam_sm_authenticate

and now i wonder even more because this is version 5 of kwallet but you are on 6.3.6 of Plasma. I would replace kwallet5 package with the new version fitting to the rest of Plasma. Maybe there are more leftovers in the system sort of preventing Plasma to work properly?

Thanks for the fast suggestions.

@Arrababiski I’m using the proprietary drivers with my Nvidia card, and the update thread mentions Nvidia+Nouveau, but I still gave this a shot. Unforntunately, it’s the same problem.

@jofi
Exactly, that’s what I thought after looking into this a little: Why is there KDE5 stuff left around? According to this answer, this may be intended. On the other hand, the person said this more than a year ago. Anyway, it seems to still apply, the kf5 group mentioned in the linked post is still needed:

I’m also really wondering why startx works fine. What is being done differently when SDDM starts the desktop?

This shows only the problem isn’t in the graphics stack like mesa or drivers. This old way of logging into the TTY and startx isn’t like desktop environments work anymore. First you are already logged in so no need to authenticate. So it looks like authentication fails supposedly because of mismatching versions.

Yes there are a few 5-ish things so you need kwayland5 for instance but you need to remove manjaro-settings-manager and manjaro-settings-manager-knotifier. Also remove plasma5-integration. You need kwayland-integration hence kwayland5. It’s a lot of cleanup - also the old themes like breeze5 aren’t required. I had lots of these packages also around until i cleaned up. But i’m pretty certain i didn’t run kwallet5.

Thanks for the feedback.

Where did you see authentication failing? I’m not sure what you mean. I mistyped my password once in the logs at 21:26:05, but afterwards I type it corretly and authentication succeeds.

I removed the packages you mentioned: manjaro-settings-manager, manjaro-settings-manager-knotifier, plasma5-integration and breeze5. Also kwallet5. And all packages that became orphans due to that. After reboot, the problem persists. Strangely, pam_kwallet5 is still in the journal:

Do you have any resources on how to clean up?

Do you have any idea how to get more detailed logs about what’s going on?

Yes, sorry, these entries are also in my logs. This is confusing to keep version numbers in log messages and or socket names.

This is because remmina seems to require kwallet5. I see kwalletd6 in my logs which seems to be the new version.

Anyway, yes you’re right the authentication worked. Did you try to login the wayland session - since this is Plasma’s default since version 6.0?

This is confusing to keep version numbers in log messages and or socket names.

Ok so if I understand correctly, still seeing pam_kwallet5 is normal, but just unfortunate naming?

This is because remmina seems to require kwallet5. I see kwalletd6 in my logs which seems to be the new version.

You’re right, it does require kwallet5 optionally, but I removed it. Now remmina does seem to struggle:

(process:4411): libsecret-CRITICAL **: 13:47:08.455: secret_service_load_collections_sync: assertion 'paths != NULL' failed
[glibsecret] unable to get secret service: Unknown error.

Anyway, I don’t see kwalletd6 or kwallet6 in my logs at all.

Did you try to login the wayland session - since this is Plasma’s default since version 6.0?

I tried it briefly when I first had this issue. Though it should work in theory, it fails badly. I was not surprised, never attempted to use Wayland before. Here’s the system journal: pastebin.com

I still have kwalletmanager5 via package kwalletmanager installed, and it’s actually working fine. Nothing depends on it. I wonder if it should be around… Its naming suggests that kwallet5 is handling secrets, but kwallet5 is definitely removed. I’m highly confused.

I don’t understand these logs. How can we reach Reached target plasma-workspace-x11 and Reached target plasma-workspace-wayland in the same session as is indicated from

Sep 18 13:41:59 my-host systemd[718]: Stopped target plasma-workspace-wayland.target.
Sep 18 13:41:59 my-host systemd[718]: Stopped target plasma-workspace-x11.target.

And what is this

Sep 18 13:41:41 my-host vncsession[712]: pam_unix(tigervnc:session): session opened for user someuser(uid=1000) by someuser(uid=0)
Sep 18 13:41:41 my-host systemd[1]: Started Remote desktop service (VNC).

Is there some remote (virtual) X session around? I would try without. So as to remove step by step all things one doesn’t necessarily need to find the culprit eventually.

It’s installed on my system too. Seems to be just a front-end tool.

There is the kwallet and the kwallet-pam package (i’m on unstable at the moment so my version numbers are different). The kwalletd6 is in kwallet and the kwallet-pam provides a pam_kwallet5.so although its version number corresponds to the Plasma version (6.3.6 on stable).
