After latest update, picom says that there is another compositor already running

Hi. I’m using manjaro i3.
After I updated, I get an error message on start up, something about picom and glx-no-stencil, and to check picom in the CLI for more info. When I do so, I get the following error message:

❯ picom
[ 05/13/2026 11:36:15.681 c2_parse_target WARN ] Type specifier is deprecated. Type "a" specified on target "_NET_WM_STATE" will be ignored, you can remove it.
[ 05/13/2026 11:36:15.681 c2_parse_target WARN ] Format specifier is deprecated. Format "32" specified on target "_NET_WM_STATE" will be ignored, you can remove it.
[ 05/13/2026 11:36:15.681 c2_parse_target WARN ] Type specifier is deprecated. Type "c" specified on target "_GTK_FRAME_EXTENTS" will be ignored, you can remove it.
[ 05/13/2026 11:36:15.681 report_deprecated_option WARN ] Option "glx-no-stencil" is deprecated, please remove it from your config file and/or command line options.
[ 05/13/2026 11:36:15.682 session_init FATAL ERROR ] Another composite manager is already running
[ 05/13/2026 11:36:15.682 main FATAL ERROR ] Failed to create new session.

So then I check with pgrep -l and also inxi -Gxx | grep compositor, and the output is that Picom v is the compositor.

Anyone know how I would get rid of the error messages?

Here’s my inxi:

If you have picom running twice - I suggest checking your configuration scripts

I’ve checked my .i3/config. There’s only one instance that picom is called on startup.

Hi @neurofire

The “another compositor already running” error you got from the terminal is expected — picom was already running from your i3 autostart. You were just trying to start a second one manually to investigate. So no double-start issue.

[ 05/13/2026 11:36:15.682 session_init FATAL ERROR ] Another composite manager is already running

The actual problem is the glx-no-stencil line in your picom config — it’s been deprecated and picom now refuses to start cleanly with it.

Open your picom config and remove or comment out the glx-no-stencil line.

Thank you! That fixed it
