After install on new computer, can't shut down or restart?

After installing Manjaro KDE on a new laptop, it will not restart or shutdown.

After installing, I ran the updates, and performed a small number of items on a few lists I have of things to do after installing Manjaro–same as I’ve done to a couple other laptops and desktops, nothing new.

They were :

  1. sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack
  2. sudo systemctl enable fstrim.timer
    sudo systemctl start fstrim.timersudo
  3. Attempted to reduce swappiness using sudo echo "vm.swappiness=10" > /etc/sysctl.d/100-manjaro.conf but that file did not exist; so, created it and added the line after echo.
  4. Added the 6.6 and 5.15 LTS Kernels and removed the 6.10.
  5. Edited the grub file ( /etc/default/grub) to set GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu and GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 and then at the CLI sudo update-grub.

I think that is all, thus far.

After installing, running journalctl --boot --priority=err return two lines that appeared to be nothing of significance. I can’t recall both but one was something about not being grub-btrfs. Now it returns the same line mulitiple times (about 50) of:

I searched and there are numerous post on this but none that solved it or seemed to apply.

What am I failing to do correctly?

Thank you.

What about this one?

Or these?

PS.

This should be followed by a sync/refresh/upgrade (pacman -Syu)

Besides what I guess is a typo …
These should not require sudo.
And can be combined into systemctl enable fstrim.timer --now

You probably should not sudo echo.

echo "vm.swappiness=10" | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/100-manjaro.conf

Would be better, and would create the file if it does not exist.
But just as with your example … it would clobber any contents.
Use >> or tee -a to only append (add) lines, rather than rewrite the whole thing.

Though if you did expect the file to exist … why use the same file name?
Just create your own.

echo "vm.swappiness=10" | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/99-mine.conf

This is sorta fine, but it might be better to use /etc/default/grub.d/custom.conf instead of editing the existing file. Just create it with your lines and done.

sudo mkdir -p /etc/default/grub.d
printf "GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu\n GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu\n" | sudo tee /etc/default/grub.d/custom.conf

Thank you. After that change to session settings, the computer does shut down; but there is a delay after clicking shut down now and a message that reads [ 25.741035] spi-nor spi0.0:software reset failed -524 I might have part of it wrong because I had to write it down fairly quickly.

Also, although I didn’t check all the other machines here running Manjaro, the one laptop I checked and which shut downs and restarts normally, has the second option selected of “When session was manually saved”.

What does this mean? I have two desktops and three laptops running Manjaro KDE, all up to date, and all with this setting; why will only this machine not shut down?

I’m not suggesting that your information is not correct, but would like to understand and be able to explain it if asked why there is a difference.

Thank you.

I must be a lousy searcher because after posting I see at the bottom several links from yesterday about this. Known bug in Plasma. KDE UI Shutdown broken, but not the command-line - #2 by Aragorn

Try a newer kernel than the 6.6 you are currently using. Apparently it was fixed in kernel 6.8 (according to this Reddit thread): Weird error when shutting down after update : r/archlinux

If anyone interesting there is patch with the fix and some extra details LKML: AceLan Kao: [PATCH v7 1/2] spi: Unify error codes by replacing -ENOTSUPP with -EOPNOTSUPP

This is just warning message with probably no impact. It should be fixed in kernel 6.8 If I am not wrong.

Thank you. I’ve been trying the other LTS kernels, which is going “down” the list instead of up, and 6.1 and 5.15 won’t load. I mean when I select them from teh grub menu the HP symbol comes on the screen but the Manjaro symbol does not appear and nothing proceeds from there.

This is the results from trying 6.1. There are a few unknown device type errors at the end and missing firm ware before that. I don’t understand their signficance but I assume it 'aint good.

(I was installing 6.11 while writing this message but when I returned to that screen the install messages weren’t there to compare.)

[Added: With the session setting change and using 6.11 it shuts down without that error message. The screen brightness icon was missing in the other kernels, 6.6 and down, but appears now and works. I suppose this machine has different hardware or firmware or I loaded something wrong. I thought I picked proprietary drivers when installing and maybe should’ve picked open source; I think I let the default of open source go on the other machines.]
