Add locale Deutsch (German) does not exist anymore in Add Locale

Hi,

I can’t find the German (Deutsch) locale (language pack) in
Manjaro Settings Manager > Locale Settings > Add Locale on Manjaro XFCE
I want my system in German (Deutsch), but it’s not available anymore. I remember it used to be available, but I may have updated the /etc/locale.gen after an update.

Why is Germany not available anymore in Manjaro Settings Manager as a language? I thought Manjaro even has German developers?
Crazy that I can choose even the most exotic languages I didn’t even know existed, but I can not choose good old German.

It is quite possible your system is not up-to-date.

Or you forgot a pending restart after an update - just a thought …

That is because you misunderstand the purpose of it.

It is designed to install the language packs matching the installed locales - nothing else.

When you have the language packs installed for the installed locales - then you cannot install language packages in the settings manager.

If you want to stay in the settings manager - then you need to add a new locale - only then you will able to install the language packs for the newly installed locale.

But you can install all you want - just use Add / Remove Software - search for the langauge code - then select and install.

hmm, no it’s really up to date and I rebooted today. The problem was there last week also but I didn’t have time to investigate.

I’m now refreshing GPG keys and mirrors and try to update after that again just to be sure.

it is strange that the “Deutsch” locale would be missing.

The terminal way to check:

grep -v ^# /etc/locale.gen

the output should contain a line:
de_DE.UTF-8 UTF-8

If it doesn’t, you can edit the file and remove the # in front of the line
or add that to the end of the file

afterwards:
sudo locale-gen

The easy way (but a waste of space) is what @linux-aarhus just said:

sudo pacman -Syu glibc-locales

One could speculate if glibc locales is dysfunctional on your system.

There is a package with all locales (if I recall correct)

sudo pacman -Syu glibc-locales

That is correct - and that is what the settings manager do when you activate a locale.

//EDIT: just tested a vm installation - all locales present - including Deutch - so I have no idea.

Just recalled - did you by any chance do some .pacnew maintenance - not so long ago I spotted a locale.gen.pacnew - a mishap ?

In any case de_DE.UTF-8 UTF-8 is a longtime default - there is no way it has gone awol without some manual intervention - perhaps filesystem errror - but is a long shot…

This line is not even present in the locale.gen file.
The strange thing is, I previously had German (Deutsch) installed.

Next thing im gonna do is reinstall glibc-locales as Aarhus suggests

I’d say:
try putting it in there - but it really should be there already - just commented out

The file /etc/locale.gen is part of glibc
Perhaps there is a .pacnew file you did not merge?

No, there is no new pacnew file.

If you search for the above you won’t find if it is uncommented

lf this is also returning nothing then your locale.gen file is damaged.

It is incomplete the first part of the file is missing.

This is you missing part - therefore you have no de_DE - perhaps other parts are missing - I have not checked - but you have definately edited the file - a GUI editor as root perhaps - accidently marked a section and delete (poof)

It returns nothing, so my locale.gen is indeed damaged I believe.

I don’t have calamares installed, but I do have calamares-tools installed

Likely that won’t help.
(but I don’t know where the manjaro settings manager get’s it’s input from)
Why?
Installing glibc-locales will not touch this file.
It just provides all the locales - not the configuration file.

a reinstallation of glibc should at least generate a .pacnew file

or just extract it from the package
or use the sample @linux-aarhus posted
or just edit the file and put it in there

something happened - the file does not contain everything it should contain

When you initially installed the system - the installer (Calamares) added the chosen locale to the bottom of the file.

Thank you guys, I think my locale.gen file got corrupted somehow. I did not know how to generate a fresh one. Thanks to @linux-aarhus I copied his locale.gen as a template for my own and regenerated with sudo locale-gen
