Been having this issue going back to kernel 6.1.x, up to current 6.6.3, it persisted even after upgrading to a 6700 XT and occurs only on the desktop.
I have never been able to figure out what is causing this, might be an application. Searching it the issue does not seem to widely occur.
What could be causing the following issues and is there a fix for it?
Monitor & Display Configuration
Monitor: BenQ EX2510, 144Hz, Freesync, FHD
Display Configuration: Refresh rate set to 144Hz, Adaptive Syncs set to Always On.
Primary Issue
After System wake up from sleep, the Desktop refresh rate (monitor OSD) regularly drops to 50-30Hz, when browsing or on light desktop workloads, causing noticeable backlight flicker on dark themed applications/backgrounds.
On starting a 3D application windowed (GLXGears), or (a game) in full screen, the refresh rate reported in the OSD goes up to 144Hz, or Adaptive Syncs matching attained FPS. Switching back to desktop it drops to 50-30Hz again causing flickering.
Putting the system to sleep & wake it up, will for some duration set Desktop refresh rate to 144Hz again.
Setting Adaptive Syncs set to Automatic sets the Desktop refresh rate to a fixed 144Hz.
Secondary Issue
Setting Adaptive Syncs set to Automatic introduces another issue.
It bugs out the BenQ OSD in ‘full screen’ 3D heavy application, on Automatic the OSD no longer reports the actual current variable refresh rate based on the FPS. It reports a fixed 144Hz, in all scenarios.
And Adaptive Syncs sometimes will not enabled and working correctly in full screen 3D applications, when set to Automatic. Causing backlight flickering again in dark scenes. While the BenQ OSD reports a fixed 144Hz refresh rate.
