ACPI BIOS Error (bug): AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT, Index (0x000000008)

Hi.

I have an ACER Aspire A114-31 with Manjaro.

When I plug the charger in the screen goes black and it freezes completely. Only a restart helps an only when I start it without the charger in.

I updated the BIOS. Error stays.

The following error occurs:

Hello,

Might not be much, but you could try to add acpi=off in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line inside the /etc/default/grub file … but then even ACPI events that work will be disabled …

Or maybe you can try instead to add acpi_enforce_resources=no (but not both at the same time) and once you modified the grub file, from terminal you run:
sudo update-grub

Restart your system and see if things changed for better.

A slightly smaller hammer would be

acpi_enforce_resources=lax

I already tried acpi=off, then the PC wont even start.

I tried the β€œsmaller hammer” from @cscs acpi_enforce_resources=lax but it doesn’t change anything.

Looks like ACPI-errors are mostly harmless, but the driver for your charger is missing or buggy?
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=280549
Firmware for this charger needed?

I don’t think so, its the standard charger from the manufacturer. But how would I find out which firmware to install? the gnome-firmware doesn’t help at all. Haha.

There are many firmwarefiles in the AUR!!
Maybe the name of the devices matches the name of the AUR-packet.
This time using AUR is not bad but sometimes or most times the one and only possibility…
Another explanation would be:
USB port overload (initial current is to high) ==> safety shutdown…
<==> but then: booting with charger put in would work…

tl;dr

OLD firmware does not care about standards ACPI code and newer Linux Kernel just scream about it in logs.
Fairly solution is just upgrade BIOS/UEFI Firmware from Acer, BUT Acer does not care. You have recent version so nothing you can do with this.

noacpi or acpi=off are for debug, not for normal usage.

Intel Apollo Lake released in 2016. So, it is normal see weird ACPI codes errors in latest Linux Kernel.

Flag like acpi_enforce_resources is useful for sensors detect. Nothing more now.

@walrussi please just ignore this mess in DMESG.
