25.0.7 hibernation vanished

After updates and trying to resolve the .pacnew files (from the last THREE updates, because I simply forgot) my option to hibernate vanished. It is not even offered as an option. Clearly I did something wrong, but I have no idea WHAT!

So, how do you make hibernate no longer be an option and how do you REVERSE that.

It has been working properly from install (about 3.5 years ago) until this week. Any pointer would be most welcome. (As long as it is not a pointer into the WIKI, which seems to be down right now.)

UPDATE: Pinebook died, now running a DELL Ultrabook with i5-6300u X86_64 CPU.

A quick grep ".pacnew" /var/log/pacman.log does not show anything from the pacnews that could have caused that, in 2025 at least.

Your pacnew list can of course differ. AND according to your profile you are on arm, and unfortunately that branch is beginning to differentiate significantly from the x64 one.

Why don’t you go through the procedure to activate hibernation once again and see if something is missing? Basically it will either be the resume hook in mkinitcpio or the resume in the kernel boot line in the grub config.

I updated my profile to include current hardware.
Ran those steps (for BIOS machine, have EFI disabled) and saw no difference. Added the resume=PARTLABEL=swap to my kernel command line in the grub config, and saw no difference. (Except it does appear on the command line and there is a generated error about not finding something. The partition label IS swap, but I have not tried using the UUID yet.
EDIT: tried the UUID and viewed the error again. It is a failure to stat device. Does that help?

I suspect it is automatically hidden if not working/configured.

I would have said to try the command line (systemctl hibernate), but since you already see the error on boot it is obvious it will not work.
You can see the errors in the kernel buffer and from the current boot.

This and some other useful commands i have collected here.

To me so far seems like a problem with the swap partition. This error was mentioned in several topics in the forum but i cannot remember the specifics.
Post the logs here we might get new ideas.

So, okay, I put the hibernate device on the kernel command line. I tried using the label for the partition, and when that failed the UUID for the partition. Both seem to fail.
Should I be doing something additional or instead?

with an current systemd/mkinitcpio the resume device will be stored in an uefi variable. Setting the kernel parameter is not needed anymore.

so just check if ‘resume’ is in etc/mkinitcpio.conf in HOOKS. and if your swap partition/file is active and the size is approximately your RAM+VRAM.
(If you have an swap file, make shure it’s not in /home)

I corrected the format of the above. Not quite sure what is going on. Maybe the full inxi -zv8 or cat /etc/fstab will help. I see at the beginning of the systemd log 2 partitions are expected, the question is are those found an mounted successfully and what are those. May be fully unrelated.

From the last post, it seems like you are hibernating 16 GB RAM in 17GB swap…that might be a little too little. I am not familiar in such depths with the systemd hibernation - according to the arch wiki it should work :man_shrugging:

Okay, update. I got it working. But this is ODD.
Changed the /etc/default/grub after rereading ALL of those pages and documents.
I took the resume= out of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
line and put it into the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX line all by itself.
Then did all of the udpates (grub, mkinitcpio, etc) again.
Rebooted, and the option came back.

From my understanding that should have made NO difference whatever!
So I may have had a typo and fixed it in the redoing? I cannot be sure.

I only pray it never breaks again on this installation.
I may enable EFI for my next install and just use the EFI hibernate methods, because that (despite being problematic from a stability and security standpoint) is far more simple.

In any case: THANK YOU for the links, pointers, and suggestions. They helped. And in the end they brought me to a successful conclusion. :slight_smile:
