2 minute delay after login where display turns black

Symptom: After signing in, the screen turns black with only a mouse cursor visible. It remains that way for 125 seconds before the desktop comes up.

The .xsession-errors file shows no error messages. The Xorg.0.log files shows no error messages. The system log file shows session initialization for 10 seconds, followed by the 125 second pause during which no messages are recorded, followed by a continuation of session initialization messages.

This behavior started a few days ago. Not sure what triggered it. (It has been a while since I last rebooted.) Once the desktop is up, it seems to run fine. I have Xfce installed as a back up, and the same thing happens if I login with it, so it is not an i3wm problem.

Please provide system information as described (below).

This may help others identify any contributing factors.
Logs would likely be a good idea, also.

I don’t use i3, so I’ll step away after this. Try to provide as much information as possible.

I’m sure someone will help when they are able.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

It is difficult to say - you will need to retrace what happened…

  • I am thinking network related
  • fstab mounting a remote share
  • It could be a configuration issue

I could be anything really - perhaps check the pacman.log - this can be done with pamac or pacman-log-viewer

It is next to impossible to suggest a cause - unless one has specifically encountered a similar thing.

One can only speculate - perhaps the xdg-desktop-portal is part of it - messages containing the phrase last-resort fallback seems to point in that direction - but why - I don’t know - I have never become friendly enough with the i3 tiling thingy and my openbox experience is very dated - including my X.org related memory - as I has switched everything to Wayland.

mea culpa

Following @linux-aarhus advice to retrace my steps, I downgraded the recent updates and reinstalled one by one. It didn’t help.

The only other recent change, which I thought must be unrelated, was the introduction of a new router in my network. The new router supports ipv6 and I assumed ipv6 would be support by default. Except I forgot that back in 2019, when I first installed Manjaro, my previous router had no ipv6 support, so I disabled ipv6 in NetworkManager. After turning on ipv6 in NetworkManager, the delay at login disappears.

Not quite sure how the two are related, I guessing that the router was trying to force ipv6 address that NetworkManager did not want to accept.

As I suspected from the beginning

If the router is configured to hand out IPv6 only - then the delay is explainable when you have disabled IPv6 for your desktop.

if the router does not hand out IPv4 it could be an issue for your entire network.
