Entire system freezing during games

Hello,
I’m experiencing an issue similar to the one described in this post while trying to play more demanding games on Steam (Age of Empires II DE, Deep Rock Galactic, etc.). Although the post mentions downgrading to kernel version 5.10 as a potential fix I’m trying to avoid doing that if at all possible.
Oftentimes during games everything will freeze, leaving only the ability to move the mouse cursor, the game audio, and the ability to use SysReq keys. Other programs such as Discord seem to freeze with the game.

Did you do the above?

A little swap is always better than no swap at all because no swap often causes lockup when coredumping.

Depending on your use case 2G-4G should suffice.

If you want to ensure you swap as late as possible add the following config to sysctl.d

echo vm.swappiness=10 | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/99-swappiness.conf

Reload the system configuration

sudo sysctl --system

Can you check the temperature of the CPU and GPU ?

Hello,
I have not made a report, but you’re right in that I should. I will go to Valve after posting this.
Will try creating a swapfile and let you know what I find; thanks for the help.

UPDATE
Made a bug report on the repository here. Also linked proton logs I recently obtained in the report if you believe that could be useful.

UPDATE 2:
Sadly the swapfile didn’t seem to change anything  At least I have one now I suppose.

I have checked the sensors during this issue before. The CPU temperature runs to about 95 C, which seemed high to me but is evidently not unusual for an XPS with Turbo-boosting enabled.
I couldn’t recall the GPU temperature, so I just tested with nvidia-smi and found the game crashed at 82 C. This is the information provided by the output (taken after the game crashed, so the current temp is just idling after restarting):

        GPU Current Temp : 49 C
        GPU T.Limit Temp : N/A
        GPU Shutdown Temp : 102 C
        GPU Slowdown Temp : 97 C
        GPU Max Operating Temp : 75 C

Not sure how to interpret the slowdown temp being well above the max operating temp. According to this source it’s still below max operating temperature. Do you believe this is outside the range of safe operability?

Modern GPUs can operate up 100 °C, but this is a bit high.
The maximum temperature of a CPU is at ~70 °C.

Thanks for letting me know. I’ll see if I can reduce the CPU load.

I don’t personally believe this to be a heating issue, as sometimes the games do run fine for as long as I’m playing them, while other times they crash within about 3-4 minutes. The problem also seems to resolve itself if I play in windowed mode of all things. But I suppose it is possible there’s some kind of underlying issue that leads to CPU overuse.

Maximum temperature for modern CPUs is higher than that. Exact number depends on model but AMD Ryzen is usually 90-95 and Intel is 100-105.

Decided to look into this and my machine is currently set to throttle the CPU at 100C. I haven’t tried overclocking the CPU or anything, so I imagine this is the default for the computer. Still, there is something to be said for not running it near the absolute limit, so I might try underclocking it a little.

In any case I just experienced the issue playing Disco Elysium, which is definitely not a game that should be CPU intensive enough to cause overheating.

The wiki link showed me there are still sections for systemd-swap … which had some issues … became a warning on Arch wiki … and is now removed completely.
Manjaro should probably revisit this.

The package is in the official repo https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/systemd-swap/

Could you please elaborate?

The difference compared to zram is that zswap works in conjunction with a swap device while zram is a swap device in RAM that does not require a backing swap device.
zswap - ArchWiki

One should not mix zram and zwap

A while back - when I was going over performance - I have chosen to use zram because it bypasses disk completely - I still have swap space though - but have disabled zswap…

Note the removal from the wiki (after being moved around) here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=Zswap&action=history
You can also reference the project page here:

systemd-swap

Current code quality and commit frequency is low

Users should migrate to systemd/zram-generator since zram should be enough in most systems

I would consider getting an external cooler for your PC, mine does too when I play lots of games like bc game apostas at bcgamebrasil.com , Skyrim and Elden ring. It might be heating up a little too fast for your device’s liking. Much like what Keruskerfuerst said. CPU coolers are designed to reduce heat produced by the processor that sits at the heart of your PC.

I’ll look into it; everyone seems to be bringing it up and you all seem experienced

Seems the external cooler doesn’t help . Just experienced the problem in Downwell of all games as well, so I’m almost certain the issue is not a cooling one.

A common attribute of all the games I experience this in is that they run using some version of DirectX 10 or greater; could that be the culprit?

Finally gave up and ended up downgrading to kernel 5.15 and the issue ceased. Although this isn’t the outcome I’d hoped for, I’m happy to finally be able to play all my games.
I’ll mark this as the resolution for now, but if I ever find the cause of the issue I’ll try to update this thread.

EDIT: Nevermind; the issue has returned after a few hours for some reason :frowning:

Going to hopefully close this by saying that switching to kernel 5.10 resolved the issue. Will try to update this thread if the original source of the problem is found.
