XFCE Keyboard shortcuts delayed and firefox freeze after login

I recently started to use Manjaro and I have had a weird issue since installation. Each time I login (even after restarting the computer) shortcuts stops working for a minute or so. If I press the “Win”-key to open the menu bar nothing happens, until that minute passes and all the strokes are registered at once. This seems to apply to every shortcut I try to use.

Another issue (that I guess is unrelated) is that Firefox always freezes after login, and only starts working after a while or if I close it and open it again. The time it takes to start working again seems to be the same as the time my shortcuts are frozen.

I checked dmesg and journalctl and I can’t find anything around the time I login, all my logs are from about two days ago.

Here is my system information:

EDIT: So I checked the journalctl and it did show some stuff, I was just checking the incorrect end of the file (genious). Here is the output from switching users, logging back in and waiting for a few minutes. The shortcuts responded some during this time, but it was not fully functional even after 10 mins.

Switch to another kernel, that one is EOL.
I usually recommend no swap partition on SSD and NVME drives, but instead use a swapfile or systemd.swap

Also, not sure if @BS86 made a tutorial already about, or mentioned it (had no time to check), but on the old forum he talked about this:

Also, do you have haveged installed and the service enabled?

So I installed the new kernel (5.8.0-2-MANJARO), added the udev rules and checked that haveged was installed. Really no difference after reboot, unfortunately…

I did not move my swap partition to a file however, it is stupidly placed between the partition for /boot and root (another rookie mistake I figure). Does that affect performance much or why do you not recommend swap partitions on NVME drives?

The flash RAM cells in SSDs and NVMEs have a limited lifespan and with every write cycle, every erase wears a memory cell, so at some point it will stop working. Probably newer models do not have such problem, I could’t say from experience.
On my end, with some older SSDs and a swap partition my system is almost unusable, and once i replaced that with a swapfile or now using systemd.swap is performing with no hiccup. Of course, it might not be a good case for all systems and installs, and probably you have to look into more things. For instance:

That BIOS is old. They have a newer one

Please read carefully and if you plan on updating it to make it the proper way.

Thanks! I will look into those fixes - it is too late here right now. I’ll respond later with an update.

So honestly I went the lazy route. I reinstalled Manjaro with KDE for a few reasons:

  • I was not keen on flashing my BIOS since I’ve never had much problem with it before
  • I did not want to mess around with my swap-partition
  • I have never tried KDE before and it looks pretty cool
  • I couldn’t bother troubleshooting further and I want to just get the computer in a functional state

The delay after login seems to have dissapeared after reinstall though - but I guess it’s hard to pinpoint if it was XFCE or the swap partition that caused this. Bad investigation on my part.

But thanks for all your help anyway! It was a good learning experience.
