[Wine] Game fails to load intro video

There’s a game I’m trying to play with wine that won’t start unless I delete the intro videos in its folder, apparently because of a missing coder for .avi.

Is there a codec that I have to install with winetricks in order to make it work?

You could try installing the CCCP pack and see if that works for you.

Hello,

Found this when I googled your error
https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=15733

Installing CCCP didn’t help.

The packages mentioned are for ubuntu. They are available in AUR, but gstreamer-0.10 fails to build. I have installed all gstreamer packages for manjaro I could find, no dice.

If you open the video in e.g. VLC you can check which codec is needed. Then you can install the necessary one, which is probably in one of the gstreamer plugin packages:

$ pacman -Ss gstreamer plugins
extra/gst-plugins-bad 1.12.4-5 [installed]
    GStreamer Multimedia Framework Bad Plugins
extra/gst-plugins-base 1.12.4-1 [installed]
    GStreamer Multimedia Framework Base Plugins
extra/gst-plugins-base-libs 1.12.4-1 [installed]
GStreamer Multimedia Framework Base Plugin libraries
extra/gst-plugins-good 1.12.4-2 [installed]
    GStreamer Multimedia Framework Good Plugins
extra/gst-plugins-ugly 1.12.4-3 [installed]
    GStreamer Multimedia Framework Ugly Plugins
community/gst-plugins-espeak 0.5.0-1
Use espeak as a sound source for gstreamer
multilib/lib32-gst-plugins-base 1.12.4-1
GStreamer Multimedia Framework Base Plugins (32-bit)
multilib/lib32-gst-plugins-base-libs 1.12.4-1
GStreamer Multimedia Framework Base Plugin libraries (32-bit)
multilib/lib32-gst-plugins-good 1.12.4-2
GStreamer Multimedia Framework Good Plugins (32-bit)

Or, just try installing all of the above packages.

vlc says it’s MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv). I’ve installed those, but the error persists.

$ pacman -Ss gstreamer plugins
extra/gst-plugins-bad 1.12.4-4 [installed]
GStreamer Multimedia Framework Bad Plugins
extra/gst-plugins-base 1.12.4-1 [installed]

Will the video play in a gstreamer-based player (e.g. totem)?

You might also look up

on https://appdb.winehq.org/

I could play the videos with totem, so I can rule out a gstream issue and confirm it’s an issue either with wine or the game itself, right?

Looking around a bit more, I found that the GOG version of the game (I’m trying to play the steam version) has better compatibility. I’ll give it a try

What does the winehq page on the game say about your issue? Anyone else have the issue there?

The steam version is reported to have problems with the cutscenes(latest test), maybe it’s the same issue. The Gog version test says that everything works, but launching the game from the terminal shows the same error.

No idea about how to fix it.

I managed to find a solution in a discussion thread about another game. After installing LAVFilters the game correctly loads the intro videos, without video or audio distortions.

Did you install those under WINE or for the host Manjaro system?

I installed them under wine.
