WiFi and soft lockup issues in Acer Nitro 5

#1

Ryzen 2500u + Rx560x
Latest manjaro stable iso
Attempt to liveboot the iso
Free drivers causes Soft Lockups on CPU5
Non free drivers hasn’t till now but idk

Cant connect to Password protected WiFi
It shows Stuck on Setting Network Address for a while before it disconnects
Connecting to open WiFi From my phone works
The wifi adapter is qca61x4a

Qualcomm WiFi suddenly not working
#2

did you try and search the forum for related threads .?

#3

That specific thread doesnt inspire much confidence about the linux compatibility of my laptop :frowning:
A quick search doesnt show much about wifi while theres a lot of discussion about soft lockups. The liveboot session with non free drivers for me was pretty stable, only the wifi issues held me back from installing for good

#4

i’ll take a took, i have not read that thread as i primarily use an intel/nvidia optimus lappy which itself can be a task for a newcomer to set up. a lot of these issues are solved with kernel parameters added to grub which is also what i need to do to even be able t boot to a graphical desktop without freezing.

can you explain a bit more about when the lockups occur (what your doing when it happens). and also some system info will be helpful. inxi -Fnxxxz and anything else relevant you see here:

dont forget to put three backtics above and below terminal output so its formatted properly, alternatively you can also hit the </> button above the post entry box and paste the output. i’ll take a quick look to see if i can find anything to resolve your current issue.

this thread here is more likely to answer your issues.

#5

well the lockups happen while booting using the free drivers . Cant even see the desktop.
I can boot fine using non free drivers for now.
Livebooting rightnow to give the inxi - Fnxxz output

#6

hold on.

when you get to the welcome menu where you choose free/nonfree, make your selection and then move the selector to where it says boot but dont hit enter, instead hit e and then find the word quiet then delete it and add the following kernel parameters and make sure there is a space left before and after both of them.
iommu=soft and idle=nomwait
then hit CTRL+X to boot

#7

Doing this rightnow, will report back . Should i use free drivers then ?

Edit - Ofcourse it will boot with Free drivers, saw it mentioned along with Quiet . Sorry for the noob mistakes

#8

i believe free but i could be wrong. i think free is the popular choice for amd and adding amdgpu later is an option. again, im not sure. if you want to see exactly what drivers manjaro hardware detection lists as compatible with your gpu just enter mhwd in the terminal and it will list compatible drivers.
just remember that if those parameters work, they only work for that boot and if you reboot will need to be added back in. after your finished installing to make them permanent you would just edit /etc/default/grub

Kernel Boot Parameter

Adding a kernel boot parameter for GRUB in Manjaro:

  1. Open the file /etc/default/grub in a text editor.
  2. Add the parameter, in this case idle=nomwait (notice the m ), to the line starting with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="<current parameters ...> idle=nomwait iommu=soft" .
  3. Save the file.
  4. Update GRUB: sudo update-grub .
  5. Upon next reboot the default boot option should include the parameter.

#9

Did what you said , booted with free drivers for the first time

#10

nice, glad it worked out. is your wifi working?

#11

It showed the available WiFi networks for the first 10 seconds, had the same issue with protected WiFi as before . And then it just died. Dmesg shows a lot of Ath10k related failures

#12

this is no surprise, there are a bunch of threads on them that @tbg is great at resolving. just do a forum search and you’ll probably find your solution. i’ll also take a look.

you might want to get manjaro installed/updated first since any changes made will need to be repeated after rebooting since you in a live environment it resets each boot.

can you copy/paste dmesg | grep ath10 so we know exactly what issue its having.

#13

I am typing from my phone rightnow . Tried using mtp to copy the dmesg to phone before uploading but it seems the PC can’t write to it

#14

you were previously able to connect through hotspot/tether on your phone right?

also in terminal copy/paste output
rfkill list all
journalctl -b 0 -o cat | grep NetworkManager

#15

The mtp issue resolved itself somehow .

ok, do you have a wifi key on the keyboard? Fn+F3 or whichever is the one you have. your goal is to have the output of rfkill list all not output any yes’s. you want to see only no’s so try and use that button/buttons for both wifi and/or bluetooth until the output of rfkill list all is all no’s

or better yet you can do this
sudo rfkill unblock wifi
sudo rfkill unblock bluetooth

and check rfkill again

ok did what you said , had to do it twice to get this output

0: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
1: acer-bluetooth: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
2: hci0: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
3: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
