Why VirtualBox outperforms KVM

I want to get rid of my dual boot with windows in favor of a Windows VM.
Because KVM is a type 1 hypervisor and Vbox is a type 2, I expected to get much better results with KVM, but the opposite happened, and Vbox performed much better.
I tried KVM in virt-manager, and I installed the virtio drivers.
I gave the two VMs the same resources.

Did I do something wrong in KVM?

I have no experience with type1 hypervisors and while I use VirtualBox for my needs of virtual computing - I have heard that gaming - is not running well in vbox environments.
