Your HDD stopped responding for 2 minutes and kernel gave up. Everything what was waiting for IO has thrown error, including DNS resolver (Internet died), HexChat and other things.
Please share SMART data of your HDD.
Also perform SMART long-test and show us results.

So the Fix here would be: Replace HDD with SSD?

It’s the HDD, not SSD which stopped.
Please show stats for your WDC_WD10EARX, do long test on it as well.
When you do please show smartctl --all to show SMART attributes.
Data indicates that you have this hard drive on USB? It may prevent you from doing SMART tests. And having HDD on USB may decrease its stability as well, due to typical problems with USB dock cheap power wall adapters, for example (if you have any). Or it could be USB power saving options, and many other things.

Also, your system tries to execute text file /etc/cron.hourly/protokoll every hour and generates an error. Move this text file somewhere else.

B)… its 7 hours after midnight, i’m pensioner and still need sleep :slight_smile:
C) WDC_WD10EARX is my external backup drive, so no need to get to panic!!! Thats a good news!
D) The long test takes some time , i report later.
E) Question: i’m used to take Gnome-Drive to view and test SMART, but that does not show anything for my main internal SSD where my Manjaro is installed?! Or does a SSD does not have SMART features or has to be unmounted?
For the main SSD-drive with Manjaro I took extra installed smartctl that showed what i posted but the long test is much too quick?
F) As you can see … lots of things to learn!
G) A cron job “backintime” runs at 00:00 writing a Manjaro data backup to WDC_WD10EARX

This could be the culpit:
External HD WDC_WD10EARX is connected over USB-C from my Laptop and this fu… is known for probs:
USB-C on Lenovo Yoga Laptop

Furthermore i queed several USB-hubs, ok no good idea!

So i think its ok to mark this thread as solved!

What i still have to investigate: gnome-disks doesn’t show me SMART values for my SSD’s. Smartctl shows smart-values but doesn not perform tests!

If Gnome Disks doesn’t show SMART data, then don’t use this tool. Smartctl have everything you need. Stats via --attributes or --all arguments, and tests via:
smartctl --test=long /dev/sda (Executes extended disk self-test)
Check smartctl --help for usage.

The drive has to be supported in the tool. In my case gnome gsmartcontrol reports a nvme drive as unsupported, are you using this tool? With smartctl installed inxi reports it as PASSED.
