Why are most compositors so meh?

So I've had to move away from KDE because its compositor (KWin?) is terrible at preventing screen tear, either on the desktop (in Firefox etc) or in games such as OverWatch. XFCE's default compositor wasn't up to the job last night after I installed XFCE too.

I switch to Gnome (on Xorg) and both issues disappear instantly.

Which DE and/or compositor is best at dealing with this issue?

Using a Vega 56 GPU with the latest stable-release mesa and the current 5.4 rc kernel.

Maybe you should try this:
Edit>
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "AMD"
Driver "amdgpu"
Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

Thanks @Elloquin, I'll give that a go and hopefully it sorts it!

Ok, so I removed the 2 DEs I had installed after removing Plasma, Gnome & XFCE, and left myself with a terminal prompt on boot.

So I reinstalled Plasma, the base package and went back to the 5.3 kernel and everything's working spot on now!

I'll check my conf file later just to see what's in it, but for now there's no screen tearing :+1:

I always found KDE's compositor to be among the best.

Yeah don't know what caused it to go off like this. Plasma's been brilliant for me otherwise, and it remains my favourite DE atm. Just really glad I didn't have to migrate to Gnome full time :grimacing: :joy:

Where can you download this great plasma?

He is talking about KDE, their Desktop Environment is called Plasma.
