twm
was the name - well, it still is
perhaps it is even still integrated in Xorg today ā¦
Ah, the Tiling Window Manager. Iāve tried that one too, but it was tiling-only ā no overlapping windows.
I believe itās still included by default in the xorg-server
package.
Hi @SwissLinux
I wonāt recommend any Display Environment;
However, I do like a few of them;
- XFCE was my goto for a few years; generally solid and reliable; theming handled via
kvantum
, which you might appreciate - it can be quite customisable, if you enjoy that challenge. - Iāve always liked i3 and now Sway (geared more for Wayland), though I havenāt yet found a practical use for such a minimal environment.
- My favourite is KDE Plasma, which Iām currently using on Wayland, with AMD graphics. Wayland just makes good sense with this combination; however, if you intended to use Nvidia graphics with Wayland, well, I can only say āGood luckā.
If you want some tangeable advice regarding which DE to choose, the best I can possibly offer isā¦
try them allā¦
ā¦or, at least, those that seem appealing.
Manjaro ISO flavours are just a download away; you can install them as Virtual Machines, if you like, until you find one thatās perfect for your needs; and you will.
Cheers.
This is how it happens on Xfce
Xfce is the illustration of āIf it works, donāt fix itā
You do your job on it.
Just like my mechanical corkscrew. : always works, while my sister has her 6th electrical one (much fancier).
@scotty65: Thank you very much for the edit.
@all: Thanks a lot for your inputs. Iām impressed to receive so many answers!
everybody has got an opinion - I hope you can derive something useful from the collection of them
probably not without actually trying out each one recommendation
Yeah, my partner liked XFCE, she used to tell people āitās a simple desktop for a simple personā
She now uses KDE Plasma, though.
